Survival fixed,

DSC06246.jpg

Buck Nighthawk....$40 bucks at Wal-Mart. I've abused the hell outta this thing and it continues to perform flawlessly. I will eventually get a Fallkniven S-1, but I don't think it will outperform this thing. Built like a tank.

You know I have a swamp rat M-6,scrapyard 6 and 3 ontario rats. They're all great blades but I also like the Buck nighthawk. If I was lost in the woods and the Bucks all I had,I would not feel sorry for my self.

Like a lot of others have said, you won't go wrong with anything you decide on from Swamp Rat, Scrapyard, Fallkniven or Ranger. All of those companies make exceptional products.

Everytime I see one of these "what knife" posts it makes me realize how many good knives there are, at varies prices. I love America!

Awsome suggestions guys, I just have a few questions.

What type of steels should I look for?

also ive heard of all the other companies except scrapyard, what are they new?

Entrek Javalina is what I chose. Just half your budget too.

Other knives I like for hiking:
SAK Trekker
Benchmade Griptilian (fixed or folder)
Becker Necker
Moras

We've kicked this around a lot in the survival threads. Most like a trio of tools like an SAK or multi-tool, medium fixed blade, and a machete, small axe/hatchet, or folding saw.

Ranger RD whatever size you want  any where from 4-6 should do.

EDIT: As for the steel, that's a really hard question. Take a look at Joe Talmadge's Steel FAQ. Understanding steel properties and how this translates into knife preformance takes time.

However if you're looking at the knives, espicially the higher end knives, I wouldn't worry that much. The recomendations are based on good preformance.

But to answer your question as directly as possible you can't go wrong with carbon steels (from a good maker) such as 1095, 5160 ect.
Others include ATS-34, 154CM, CPM S30V, and A2

This is the blade that goes with me. Full tang, mean hammer at the end, and the blade gets me through everything, the handle will not slip.

I have folders but what Im missing is a nice fixed blade. I need a knife that is insanely tough and could be used for survival purposes if needed. As for size Id like to have a sort of bushcraft style knife that could fit in a pack if needed. $200 is the limit.

mora 510/511 are good knives, the "clipper" is also a really good knife, you can have these in both 12c27 and 1095. these knives are very tough, i have 4 moras i use daily for lots of abuse so i know they can handle it. very inexpensive blades, ok theyre not traditional "survival knives" (you know big and heavy choppers) but are definitely a good choice if you would be put in that situation. massproduced so theyre all the same.

id say most toolsteels are probably a good choice (maybe not airhardening ones), then medium carbon (like 0.6-0.9%C, or maybe a little more) carbon steel. then low carbon ss (like 12c27, aus 6, 420 etc)

for survival use the last thing you want is a blade snapping, so avoid anything with more than 1% carbon id say. straight carbon steel rusts, and that can be a problem. todays low carbon ss is fairly tough so its a matter of preferences i guess, however i would never ever completely trust steels like 154cm or s30v and similar, at least not for survival use. if youre uncertain go with straight carbon or some low alloyed tool steel imo, most people would probably like a dull blade better than no blade at all:)
