Picked up this that at REI Tuesday and was pleasently supprised to find a pocket inside that is supposed to hold cash or keys. Don't really care about that so I wanted to see what kind of kit it could hold.
So right now in it I have a Buck Hartsook, a small sheet of foil, 3 fish hooks and sinkers, 10 feet of 10 pound test, 5 strike anywhere matches wraped up in wax paper for extra water proofing and tinder if needed, 2 micro pur tabs, a quart zip lock freezer bag and a ferro rod (not shown in 1st pic) that I picked up from Ron Hoods site. Everything except the knife and zip lock fit in the plastic bag the ferro rod comes in, the knife and bag fit in the pocket next to it.
When I have time I want to add a paracord braid to the brim, might do that tonight.
I'm pretty happy with it, it suppliments or duplicates what i normally have on me. It was a fun way to spend half an hour last night.
Opinions?

That is a really great idea, I may have to steal it from you. I never thought of putting psk items in something other than my backpack. If you don't mind me asking how much was the hat from REI?

Cool hat, I've been looking for something similar for a good while. Smart additions to the 'secret' pocket.

Thanks guys.

It is the REI Explorer hat, and I think it is @$35. I had a 20% cupon so got it for less than $30 which was nice. If you are a memeber, you can use than cupon through Saturday the 16th I believe.
Going up to LA tomorrow to take a wild foods class, it will get it's 1st walk about then.
I like the Hartsook for what it is. I am a big fan of neck knives, I usually use a BK11 on hikes. After using that, the Hartsook was a bit small, but for the hat I think it will be great.

I don't know about that fire starting kit in the background. Sure, it's reliable and you can quickly boil water, but durn it's BIG!

Cool hat! Got any more pics?
I'm just curious as it looks almost identical to the Chinese ones (Misty Mountain Brand) they sell at Walmart.
I've never been a hat kinda guy but at the beginning of the summer i picked one up a Walmart very cheap (like 10$).
And surprisingly i used it a lot this summer.
Since then i've seen them at my local army surplus store as well, in multiple colours as well. D'oh! Mine is or rather was white.
I coffee dyed it so its kinda creme coloured now.lol!
Actually heres the model i have http://www.weaverdevore.ca/product_info.php/products_id/72
Next year i might buy a Tilley!
:)

To my shame, you had me for a minute. "5 matches, a ferro rod an waxed paper? What more does he want out of me?"

Oh yeah, I took the picture on my stove.

Crap.

hey lumpy are you taking the class from west side college??? there is an old lady with her husband that teach the class. I forgot to sign up for it and then i were to late.

There is but one hat and Tilley is the name :)

I beat you to the hatband :D I've had one on my Tilley for a while, but I used a little paracord to tie the ends on rather than a buckle. I basically sewed the band to the chin strap lines on each side so it wouldn't fall off-- just a few loops of light line.

Another wat to do the hatband is to weave the paracord in and out of the loops on a booney hat. Takes about five minutes and makes the hat sit better too.

Thats a great idea, but I was wondering, how do you make the braid of parachute cord. Ive never seen that before. Is there online instructions or maybe a tutorial or something?

Nope, I'm taking the one from Christopher Nygeres http://www.wwmag.net/christopher.htm.
I have taken several of his classes. He is a great teacher and a fantastic human being. The Saturday class is going to be up in the Angeles Crest. Let me know if you are going to go, be great to see another member there. A lot of LA hoods woods folks stop by the class as well.

Dale I like that idea of tying it off like that, I would worry about the buckle.

Bladenut, there are lots of posts if you try the search function. I'd try to list some for you, but I can't goof off THAT much at work.:D

Hi LumpyMike i wish i could make one of his outings but i work on saturdays.... life in the big city...

Thats too bad, Saturday was a great class, finally got my cordage making down and made some great Yucca cords.

He also does a night class at PCC or Glendale Community College (one of them) according to his site.

Tilleys are the best. The pocket in the top is a standard from tilley. They float too!
