Anyone see "Cloverfield" yet? It's a pretty decent movie...basically an alien-monster movie set in Manhattan, NY with post-apocolyptic themes and situations thrown in from first person point-of-view. If you can watch it, go do so. It made me think a lot about urban disaster survival. Of course, I don't think we'll see a giant alien-monster anytime soon lol, but I guess if you're prepped for a giant alien-monster attack, you'll be prepped for anything. ;)

It reminded me of 9/11...buildings falling, dustclouds, etc. They also showed rioting and basically social chaos, which reminded me of what occured in Thailand during the Tsunami and the rioting in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Akin to the "Zombie Apocolypse" threads from the past, I'll list a few items I feel would serve me well in a "massive-giant-alien-monster-invading-my-city" scenario. I hope I don't ruin the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, but here are some items I feel would help me in the situation presented in the movie.

1) First Aid Kit, complete with QuikClot, bandages, and the rest.
2) A strong LED flashlight that could help me find my way through the subway tunnels.
3) Safety-comfort masks to prevent inhalation of toxic fumes and dust particles.
4) Turbo Charge Cell Phone Portable Charger (It delivers a flow of power from an AA battery to your cell phone, it's really a great device when you can't get to a power outlet or to your car charger)
5) A weapon of some kind (to fight off alien offspring, at least in the movie lol). I'd probably go with a machete, since it's hard to get a gun around where I live.
6) Change of clothes, especially if I was well-dressed for a party while running through the city from an alien-monster in a suit all night.
7) Extra food and water for energy and replenishment.
8) My Leatherman multi-tool...not sure exactly how it would function in an alien-monster invasion but you never know when you might need it.
9) Finally, a small handicam to document what may be the last moments of my life if I was ever put in that situation.

Let's have fun with this thread.

Hey, I carried most of that living in Manhattan during normal times.
Just a few of the comforts of home. :)

urban jungle
gotta cope
with the crowding, noise and smoke

buildings falling
riots raging
living in the city is no joke

now the monster's coming too?
take him to the bronx and see
we work hard to make a buck
wasting monsters, that's for free

I love zombie threads .....

they help me prepare for real zombie attack , otherwise known as martial law ...

just my opinion

I skipped out on Cloverfield and saw I am Legend instead. Although I didn't pick up on anything from that movie that I didn't already know, however, it did make me even more aware about the possibilities of a virus going airborne. It's highly doubtful that we will turn into man eating "night walkers."

Saw Cloverfield yesterday. Great monster flick. I was thinking about a flashlight, too (tunnel scene). But I think battery life would have been more important than ultimate brightness. As much as I love my E2e (b-day gift from a good friend), it doesn't last that long with the incan (I know, need to upgrade to LED). I'd probably use the Dorcy Super 1Watt in my bag first and save the SF for when I needed throw. The Inova X1 on my keychain would be good to hand out to one of the people in my group. Also, you could always make a good old fashioned torch from debris. It wouldn't have throw, and it may not last forever but it could also be used as a weapon. Even werewolves and vampires are afraid of fire.

My SAK would get more use than my single blade trapper but it would be good to have both in my pockets.

I'd think I'd go for a tire iron or a crow bar over a machete for an urban environment. Pry open doors to buildings, cars, vending machines. And it would make a fair weapon. I don't have a first aid kit with me at all times but in the city there are plenty of things you could scrounge to make an emergency bandage, napkins and duct tape if it came down to it. Raid the wreckage of a drug store. Even a tube of neo-sporin, a car chamis and a roll of b-day ribbon would beat a band-aid.

My county has 3 million people in it and it butts up against LA county (way more than 3 million people). Human mobs would be just as dangerous as zombies or a giant monster. Wonder if I should look for maps of the sewers...

Haven't seen the flick, but I'll take the ar-15 with tac light and extra batteries (TLR-1 if anyone cares). Crowbar is good, maybe bolt-cutters?
