survival kit idea

The main idea of my survival kit is how I store it witch is a large diaimater pvc pipe with end caps and items stoerd in side of it. Of corse it is water proof and is perty shock absorboant. I gess you could also use it to hold water. So far I cant really think of any thing horribly wrong with it but if there is let me know.

PVC is pretty big, bulky, and heavy. I'd rather just throw it in a nalgene or guyot. It would work though.

The Mossberg 500 JIC,( just in case ) comes in a waterproof shockproof tube
Also has a small survival kit

LoneWolf7 :D

I figure you could also store a gun and some ammo in it witch is really a good part of any survival kit. Also pvc parts are not very expensive

I would think you can do better. Maybe a sealed metal cup or something that would be water proof and usable for cooking/water boiling.

I keep mine in a water bottle/water filter. Only when hiking though. Otherwise I keep my emergency kit inside my left/right leather gloves. So they are always on me.

well you could put a billy can or metal cup in the kit ,that way you dont have to take apart your whole kit (how you lose stuff) in a situation when you need it.

I think it's a good idea depending on where it is going to be stored and how you plan to use. If you're talking about a smallish survival kit I don't think it would well, but a big one for a pack or in the truck, it's nice idea.

Where are the pics?????

If it's wet where you are and you have equipment in your kit that needs to be kept dry, that's a good idea. I try to use gear that won't be damaged if I drop it, or get it wet and like to keep the core of my survival kit on my body and the rest in a small pack. That way if I lose part of it, I still have a functional kit.

the plus side to a pvc kit....if it is long enough you could build a water filter system out of it and use that for an extended time...

i made one once...worked really well...just used sand and charchol with fine pebbels...nice clean tasting water.

I have used the larger diameter pipes for stashing goodies in the wilds. I know folks who bury firearms/ammo this way. But to carry I think it may be a bit bulky and awkward to pack. But for buried caches it would be great.

I think if it's a good idea depends on how you plan to carry it.
If you did something like use a Nalgene-sized pipe and carried it in a MAxpedition Roly-poly with a Nalgene/Guyot in another Roly-poly, you could clip them together and ptu s sling strap on it for a handy little kit.

However, if you're going to carry it in say, a Maxpedition Jumbo, then it'd be better to have a water bottle int eh bottle carrier section, and your kit in flat boxes that fit the other compartments.

I don't like the kits in a bottle idea, because where do I keep the kit when I have the bottle full of water? If you have another bag or something to carry the kit in when the bottle is in use, why not just plan to carry the kit that way and leave the bottle empty?

Why have all that bulk when there is an empty water filter bottle filled with air? Also if you have another bag to carry the kit, maybe you can stuff the bag into the water bottle. The bottle takes up the same amount of space whether it's empty or full. Really if I had to rely on my survival kit and were thirsty for water, I would just remember to stuff the kit's content into my pockets before using the bottle. The water filter bottles can be a pain to stuff items into and get them out; that is one issue I have with mine. I keep a hankersheif in mine for pre filtering water and other uses that could also serve as a carrying sack for the kits contents if I am using the water bottle in a survival situation. It can be redundant to carry the kits contents in a water filter bottle if you are out for extended hiking and already have your water bottle/filtration needs met. But it's easy and sufficient to bring with me when doing day hikes or mountain biking and only carry with me some food, water, Knife (of course:D), another knife, a few more knives, my personal survival kit, and.....................oh yeah a knife:D

For extended multi day hikes I carry a much smaller survival kit (actually the Doug Ritter Survival kit customized to my liking) Stuffed into a pair of leather work gloves and kept on my person at nearly all times in some pocket. Actually the kit pouch is stuffed into my right glove and kept on my right hand side (next to my 2 AA 3 Watt Rayovac LED flashlight), the other left glove has a folded black garbage bag and a SAK Champ and is kept in my left cargo pocket (beside my Cell Phone). I guess it all comes down to personal preference. If one of you saw me someplace while I was out on the road, it might surprise some to know that the above mentioned PSK inside Leather Gloves/Flashlight/Cellphone is on my person at all times (except when showering/sleeping). Not just when hiking. I mentioned this kit before in some other thread. If fact it's on me right now as I await pickup from Enterprise. The rig is parked and I have the next four days off to explore Nashville TN and the surrounding area. These will likely be on me tonight for the show at the Grand Ole Opry. I had it on me a few days ago when I saw Yakov Smirnoff in Branson MO, and when I went hiking that day in some state park. I don't really make plans and just go with the flow so it's great to have this on me at all times. I know I want lunch soon and will likely eat near the Mall/Bass Pro/Opry, but otherwise I really don't know where I might be going. I might explore some civil war battlefield or a cave in the next few hours. I will likely drive out to Smoky Mountain Knife works sometime this weekend and do some random hiking/exploring in the Smoky Mountains. There have been times before where I didn't come prepared and while a PSK wasn't needed, it would have brought increased peace of mind. So now I may not now what adventures await me on a day to day basis; but I am assured that whatever or wherever they are, I am more or less prepared with the gear and knowledge I need. I don't say "Prepared to Survive" as that would sound corny and cocky. As I say to my nephew it's ok to sometimes BS others but never BS yourself ;) It would suck to have to rely on some folded aluminum foil to boil and drink water out of. Water is so important. Thats why while reading this thread I got to thinking maybe I need to figure I out a way to include some water storage into my kit. But to do so and still keep it on your person without looking like some wannabe "Survivorman" can be tough. I don't I want to walk around with a water bottle on my hip in a shoulder sling also. They do sell small water pouches in various sizes at Sports Challet and REI. I have a 6 liter one in my back pack, but maybe I should try keeping a small one liter pouch inside a pocket and see how that works. I think I owe W&SS some pictures of my PSK contents but hey I am on vacation ;)
