I am looking for the following items, or some variation of them.

The Wire Saws, I know the Chainsaw Bladed Short Kut in the shoe polish type tin is an excellent one. I need to get one of them as well, I am wondering for a source for the Genuine Article, however. The "Survival Saws" that came inside hollow handle knives have a split ring handle. I have seen the G.I. Wire Saws and they have replaceable wire blades that fit into a small cylindrical device that has a thumb screw you clamp down on, then that is attached to a split ring. Where can I get the real G.I. Saws?

I have a G.I. Lensatic and a couple of the Recta Compasses, green box, slide out mirror type. Where can I get the tiny ones that are like a button? They have a small place on the back where you can sew them to a pocket, saw it in a book about the SAS I did...where can I get a good one, preferably MilSpec?

Are the Marbles Compasses that pin on accurate and tough?

Any other ideas on these items?

Any help on Snares, Game Nets (The Brit "Purse Net" that used to be sold in BQ comes to mind) and Gill Nets...anything on that either? Any source for items you should have bought and tried 15 years ago but never did? HAHAHAHA

The real U.S. military wire saw is not a hard use item, but it is small and light and will work for typical survival situations. It can be purchased for $7.95 at Fox Ridge Outfitters, as can a small watchband compass as well as the Marble's line of compasses. http://www.foxridgeoutfitters.com You can call them at 1-800-243-4570. Fox Ridge also sells The Pocket Chainsaw, which is larger and would take up more space, but would work better and last longer. You can also buy a waterproof match safe w/compass by Silva that works well. You may also want to give Brigade Quartermasters a look at www.actiongear.com

Here is a link to the SAS compass: http://www.tripleaughtdesign.com/sas.htm It does not have an eyelet for sewing onto clothing, but it is supposedly the genuine article.

Also, on the subject of small compasses may I suggest the Suunto Clipper compass? It comes in either a luminous white bezel (the one I prefer) or a black bezel with luminous markings. Here are the links: http://www.actiongear.com/cgi-bin/tame.exe/agcatalog/level4s.tam?xax=2442&M5COPY%2Ectx=8164&M5%2Ectx=3236&M2%5FDESC%2Ectx=Compasses%2C%20GPS%20Global%20Positioning%20System%20Recei vers&level3%2Ectx=results%2Etam&query%2Ectx=suunto%20clipper&backto=%2Fagcatalog%2Fresults%2Etam

Brigade does still carry the gill net : http://www.actiongear.com/cgi-bin/tame.exe/agcatalog/level4s.tam?xax=18152&M5COPY%2Ectx=8144&M5%2Ectx=8144&M2%5FDESC%2Ectx=Emergency%20Preparedness%2C%20Survival%20%26%20Lifesaving %20Supplies&level3%2Ectx=results%2Etam&query%2Ectx=gill%20net&backto=%2Fagcatalog%2Fresults%2Etam

Here is another company that carries the gill nets and snares: http://www.epcamps.com/page448.html

Also, for snares and trapping supplies: http://www.trapperbuckshot.addr.com/Trapping-Supplies-Sales.htm

I hope this helps and does not confuse. ;-)

Clayton and Pat,

Thanks alot, I have a couple more questions though...

The SAS Compass at TripleAught, is that the compass that was rated badly in this forum months ago? Or have they improved on it or what? Someone in the past was very unhappy with a British Button Compass here.

The Marbles Clip On Compass, are they rugged? They are brass, so my guess would be "yes," but how about the innards, do they hold up well?

Thanks for the heads up on the saws, snares and nets too guys. I really appreciate it alot.

This is about the most helpful forum on all of BladeForums actually.

Don,

No experience with the SAS or Marbles compasses. So sorry no help there.

I can tell you that I REALLY like that little Suunto compass. Take a good look at that. I gave a link to it at Brigade.

Hi Don
Try this site www.sererescuesog.addr.com This site is done by former spec-op's and active duty that deal in survival and rescue for the U.S. They have some good info and links on Co. that sell really good snares Ect. The snare Co. is called "Buckshot's" hope this helps. Al

I've never used the Marble's compass, but they've been used on expeditions all over the world for over a hundred years. I have had excellent results with the small watchband type compasses sold by Sunnto, Brunton, and Nexxus. They are really small and fit perfectly in a small survival kit or a pocket. My vote for the best buy on a compass goes to the Brunton model sold by Wal-Mart for about $5.00.

I'm telling you, you guys are the Tabasco in MilRations! You guys are great, you're giving me good info and links.
