Survival Knife - British Ministry of Defence specification - Review and makeover

I quite like my version of the MOD 4 ~

Yes, pitdogs just looks like a better knife. The older older the issue, the more user friendly they look.

I guess survival means just that. They give you just enough to survive with lol. I wouldn't waste my money

I wanted to give this knife a quick makeover. But as usual when the foundation is dodgey you have to dig deep. 6 hours of manual work deep.

I started of shaping the handle whit a file and 120-papper.

Baby steps. I did not want to loose the shape and streamline it so it will be hard to hold on to while chopping. And I did not want to put a finish on it, its suppose to be raw.

Then i intended to give it a even bevel whit sandpaper.

But the hollow grind was so ify and the secondary edge so uneven that i decided to re do the hole thing.

The Öberg-cut bahco file really did a nice job.

The knife is reborn or born.

This is when i should have stopped. The rest is just me getting caught in a sharpening frenzy. :)

The old wife had the car because I was not working so i had to settle whit what i had layning around. No finer paper than 120 in sheets.

So i went straight to polishing.

Water stones for the finishing touch 120, 340, 800, 8000. What i should have done to save me time was to go up to 800 whit paper, strop it and be done.

It might not look that different but it actually feels like a capable knife now.

Befor it had a folded an painted over edge tha did not cut. Now it slices whit the best of them. :)

I really like the ergonomic of this knife, Nice work! What kind of carbon steel is made of?

Feels like a 55 or less hrc spring steel.

Edit: 54 hrc British 1095 carbon steel with a % of nickel.

Thanks! I´m really happy whit how it turned out both how it feels and looks. Its going to be exiting to see if it preforms next week.

Nice work. See, I told you all along it was a great knife :p :foot:

The handle is way too large and ill fitting. The blade is actually a very good design. I bought one and stripped the handles. It's a mod in progress so, I wrapped the handle with Mcnett Gear camo wrap until I install another handle.

Mossyhorn, have you thought about not knock the guard of and minimize the ricasso before you finish it?

I will grind off the top guard but the ricasso looks good where it is to me.
