Survival knife...easy sharpening vs super steel

I don't know super steels on a fixed , but a folder with s110v I will never buy again. 1095 cv sounds GWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN I like the ease in sharpening

I'll have to go with 5160 you can sharpen it on rocks or steel. I can't remember the knifemaker, but he was from Arkansas and made a lot of big blades and used to sell at gun shows alot. My buddy bought one 30 years ago and that was one tough 12" bowie with micarta handles. He would throw it pry with it and was really rough on it and it held up just fine. He used to throw it and stick it in his trailer floor all the time and it never did break anything. He was one crazy dude that's for sure and tough as nails as well. He probably still has that beast of a knife.

You're probably thinking of Ted Frizzell, and Mineral Mountain Hatchet Works. I've had one of their axes for more than 30 years, it's practically indestructible. Well heat-treated 5160 gets my vote, as well!

I'm not into survival prep beyond having a couple bugout bags and extra water in my garage, but I'm confused on the requirements here.

Are people really envisioning needing to sharpen your knife on a stone or a brick? If resharpening is such a concern, why not integrate a decent diamond sharpener into your kit and stop worrying about the steel alloy?

Back in the 80s many fixed blades had sheaths with a stone pocket. Nowadays all I see are fire sticks.

That's the guy he sure made some tough as nails blades. I wish I would have gotten one of his knives back in the day myself. Thanks for the info. 👍

Carbon for me. 5160, S7, 52100 are all good and I’d pick them for a survival knife more for their toughness over super steels than their sharpenability.

They still sell them FYI.

I got one but sent it back due to a bend in the blade. (Sadly I’ve gotten bent blades from several makers - apparently not in the QC checklist for some folks…).

For myself I would choose either AEB-L, Nitro V or 5160 for the steel if it was meant to be a survival knife. They all sharpen fairly easily and can take some abuse without any problem from experience. Though wouldn't turn down 3V, especially Delta 3V, considering I do have some Carothers.
