Survival knife for my nephew.

I would agree with getting the USMC knife. I don't think you can beat it for a first fixed blade knife. www.jtknives.com Shoot him an email and tell him Bill from NJ sent ya. lol I'm sure you can get it for under $50 bucks from him.

A Cold Steel Master Hunter in Carbon V would be a great survival/Hunting combo. Within your price range as well. It also has a generous guard to keep novice hands off the edge.

Im sure he would be chuffed with this............

That's a nice piece. Classy and utilitarian. I have a CS Master Hunter and like it very much; it's not nearly as pretty as that one though.

I agree that smaller is better in this case. I wouldn't want to have to clean a fish/skin an elk/chop oniions with my Ka-Bar or CS Trailmaster... I certainly could, but a 4 1/2" or shorter blade is just handier for general work. Have a look at the "short" model Ka-bar.

You'll find, happily, there are a lot of good knives in this genre/price class. Just don't drop below $30 or you start getting into junk chinese stuff with questionable steel and heat-treat. Stick with a name you recognize, at least from reviews here, and you should be fine.

i think you have to decide what is the knife for-- hunting or survival. i think you want to get him a hunting knife, a small axe with this would be less of an intrusion into the family dynamics than getting him a large knife. since this is a hunting knife a smaller blade like a swak, or one of the knives on ragweed forge might be a better comprimize than dealing with the fathers misgivings about survival. also it is not as much what you give him to carry on his belt but what you give him to carry in his head that determines survival. so give him a less controversial knife, and give him the knowledge on how to use it effectively.

Now that was the best advice I saw in the whole thread.

or one of the knives on ragweed forge

I can second that...I got a Mora #780, carbon steel today in the mail from him (Ragweed Forge) and used it a lot this afternoon...SOLID all around. I ordered that knife w/sheath ($11), a sharpening stone ($1), and shipping was $5...$17 for a nice package, and he even threw in some kind of blade touch-up stone free. Don't let anyone tell you cheap knives are crap (even though it's true 99% of the time:D )

OK, you kinda proved me wrong about going cheap :o. Excellent point, true bargains are out there. I've heard so much praise about Mora's, I'm gonna hafta order one to see what all the fuss is about...

USAF knives are good prybars. Please don't give one to a youth, it is a bitch to sharpen and doesn't cut very well at all. It'll only discourage him after he gets over the coolness factor of the pocket on the sheath and the nearly useless "sawteeth".

Nothing wrong with your swamp rat, your relatives show their ignorance in blades.

A Becker is a good starting point and so is the Cold Steel SRK both for under or close to $50, but they are not Swamp Rat quality in the end.

Skam

Look at the GI sutff its ussually cheap and ok for a first knife. Becker, RAT, SOG, and Cold Steel are pretty good too if you can find the right one at the right price.

Cold steel is just a marketing company, they make no knives. They just farm out production to whom ever will do it for the cost they want. You will see some with with Vietnam stamped on them, some with china, some with Taiwan, some with mexico. I would put my money else where.

If he is a hunter or sometime hunter, the SOG Field Pup would do nicely. I have a spare that I am holding to make as a present for a nephew also. If you want a stronger knife, I like the SOG Seal Pup Elite with the straight edge (no serrations) and satin finish. Pretty substantial knife. Might run a tad over the price though.

Hard to beat a SAK, as mentioned, the treker is a good one. It is a survival knife and would be great for camping.

Hey GUys..

My suggestion..

A Swedish SWAK and a SAK..
Ruk Sak as someone mentioned is an Awesome knife..

Hard to do better and in the range..
