Survival Knife for under 120 dollars.

I will definitely consider the RAT knives. Is the RC-5 any good? Also why is the cold steel bad? Watching the video of it it seemed quite good.

I think you'd be very happy withe the RAT 4.

I also have a SOG Seal Pup and enjoy that knife, it's a good value for the price in my opinion. But if I had to choose it would be the RAT.

Would the RC-4 allow for chopping wood if it was an absolute necessity? Also where is the best place to get it.

RC4 is a great knife. Make sure to get the RAT Cutlery and not the Ontario one, tho.

The RC5 is due out this month, and will be a great knife to get.

I THink you should give this one a real good look. Because I believe That It wount Let you down. Now, This want designed to break concreate, Nor go threw car doors, which i know it can I seen it done 2 times. Also this is a better version of the rat 7 minus alittle. Also Its made Here in THe USA.

Heres the knife

yes yes!

I had thought about it for a while but I am not a big fan of that serrated edge, if it had been one side fully solid and then with a little bit of a serrated edge on the reverse side I would consider it. Although its still a pretty dang good knife considering the butt of it can break through plexiglass.

I also have read that the handle for it isn't all that great and has a tendency to get destroyed from a simple cut held the wrong way.

One question I have about the RC-4 is the handle, is the micarta going to stand up in a wet environment or under water maybe? Also will the blade do well in water as well? I know it isn't a dive knife just curious how it would hold up. I want a knife that will be able to do just about anything in a survival situation for a long period of time if it has to. Like I said before I plan to carry three sharp objects at all time, the knife, multi tool, and small camp axe. (thinking about a Gerber Axe with saw in the hilt)

Fallkniven F1 or S1, one of the RAT knives are good choices. I doubt you can find any of the Scrapyard knives on the secondary market within your budget.

To answer your other question: micarta is completely impervious to water. You're not going to hurt it other than by burning it off.

Fallkniven F1 or S1 or A1 (you can get a used one for the price you're willing to pay)
you will not have to worry to much about rust.
I have the A1. amazing knife!

RC5 is awesome. a 5.25 inch long, 1/4 inch wide blade beast of a knife.

Cold steel is caught a bad rep for not having the best business ethics, overpriced and over hyped blades too. (Course that's my opinion).

It could do it, but it would take a while. Battoning (SP?) with it would work great if the piece of wood isnt a lot wider than the lentgh of the blade. The RC6 or RC5 would be a better chopper overall. I think www.ridgeknifeshop.com is the best place to get RATS. Good customer service, and low prices.

Micarta is one of the most durable handle materials out there. It will do just fine getting wet. The blade is a carbon steel, so in the water, it will rust quicker than stainless steels. Just remember to keep oil on the edge after drying it off from water use.

What do you guys feel the benefit of 4" 5" 6" and 7" blades are?

They are better choppers/battoners, but most of the time, you can get by with a knife blade the size of an RC4 for outdoor use.

Hope this answeres some of your Q's. Head over to the Rat Cutlery sub-forum and check it out.

I was looking at knifeworks as well because they have pretty good prices. Also I read somewhere that the Ranger RD-4 is also good. Is it better than the RC-4?

And thanks for the answers Jake.

I would go with a SOG Seal series. My seal team elite has moved to my primary survival tool.

Ranger is a division of Ontario. So If you arent a fan of the goings on between RAT and Ontario (like me), I'd go with Rat Cutlery
