I am looking for someone to make a survival knife for me based on the pics below. I have some pics with better detail I’ll try to post soon.

Bare with me… the following is long, but I hope you will enjoy the background and details of this knife set!

MY ORDER
Several years ago, I called Dave Beck to inquire about his “Tracker” (later WSK, he no longer makes either one – as everyone is aware) knife. I had used a “Tracker” that a friend had and became very curious about the knife. Dave and I discussed requirements of a survival knife based on our own experiences. It became apparent very quickly Dave not only was a skilled knife maker, but also a very skilled woodsman. He and I shared stories and found we had similar approaches to survival and the requirements we placed on a survival knife. I was on a mission of desperation to find that perfect survival knife “for me.” During the discussion, he recommended (based on our conversation) another knife he made that he believed would meet my needs better and be less expensive. What a guy! He wanted me to have the best tool for my needs and save me money (what a concept). A few days later I received his catalog with pics and specs for the knife he recommended, the “Pathfinder.” The Pathfinder struck me as a little unusual at first being so different from what I was used to. Long consideration, a few phone calls later and my $ was in the mail to launch Dave’s part of my Pathfinder mission.

I am trying to be brief, but I don’t know when it comes to knives (especially this one) - promise.

MY REVIEW
I have several knifes and they all have good quality and good features, but none have every performed anywhere near the level of my Pathfinder! It is now my benchmark for all my knifes - even causing me to sell some really nice ones. Currently, I am considering selling more even more (gasp). I have a TOPS TRACKER, owned many other TOPS, an original Newt Livesay RTAK, Kukri’s, Becker, Ontario, TOPS ATAX, Ka- bars, Kershaw Outcast, Bucks, Cases, and I’m sure I’m leaving some out but you get the idea. None of the knives meet my requirements for a survival knife. Some do come close but at the end of the day, I ask my self which knife gives me the greatest level of performance for the least amount of expended effort – my Pathfinder no contest. I can go into much more detail than I have time right now. I use it for everything in the woods, briefly I use it to:
Build self bows – drawknife (works great two handed).
Carve bow drills.
Scrape hides.
Chop with incredible efficiency (better than knives bigger and longer with less effort)!!!
Being short it is easy to control and use all day without fatigue.
*Too much to list here, but it performs flawlessly for everything I do.

A few years ago I opened a survival school in the southeast and had numerous opportunities to test it against even more knives and tools. At the end of every day, no one could talk me out of it ($$$) but most of them wanted one! If anyone is interested in making a variant of this knife for me or know anyone who might please contact me.

I hope you’ve enjoyed these pics and the path I have been on with this knife! Remember I am NOT bashing any knife, only sharing my experience and favor for mine!

Nice looking blade mate and a good set. I like this because it seems simple but effective, no wierd hooks and curves!! I still love my Swamprat Camp Tramp which is my favotite do all knife, but yours looks like it would handle anything to. Good luck with your search..

Reminds me of bolo knife a friend of mine has. It looks fairly easy to duplicate, though I'm not a knife maker. good luck.

OMG!!! Sir, you also seem to be telepathic! :D

In all seriousness though, your large blade is almost exactly like the general profile of a pet design of mine also inteneded for a general purpose, field knife. I'd also like to see it realized one day. Someone previously commented that it looks like a friend's "bolo", which is exactly spot on. It does look similar to the all-around cutting tool you can generally find strapped in the waists of rural folks and farmers here in the Philippines. The large belly helps in butchering and heft for chopping while the back portion helps for finer work or whittling.

Even the smaller knife looks excellent and functional! Personal preference for a dropped point though. The name "Pathfinder" also has a nice ring to it too.

May they serve you well for many years. Great minds DO think alike!

If my vague memory works at all I remember Dave saying he got the design from a Guam design. So who knows...

While not as sexy as many of the fad styles, there are so many chores it handles with ease. Especially without flopping around on your pack or beating you on the leg. It is short enough to stow or carry at the ready.

Lytefoot, If you haven't already, contact Bill Siegle as he requested. Those of us who have his blades tend to rave about their performance and value. Definitely let him take a run at making your knife.

Below is one of his I have and think of as a "Nessmuk bolo". :)

you guys are killing me! I love all of what I see :) Whats in the pocket on the Beck Sheath?

Rokjok,

Good looking blade! Can you give some details? What type of steel? Thickness? Etc?

Brian,

The pocket on the Beck sheath contains a companion knife he called the Porcupine. It is the small knife in the pics.

I know Dave Beck does great work and I wish he was doing business so I could order a set just like the Pathfinder. If anyone makes a knife to look like this set please put on the forums and I will be glad to order it. I hope LF gets his set made. I know what it is like to have a favorite knife, you always want a backup to it.

I may be wrong but if someone out there knows the answer, please let me know. I think Newt Livesay made a Survival Bolo Knife thats looks almost just like the Beck. If anyone knows about this knife please let me know. Also is Newt Livesay still in business?

"Also is Newt Livesay still in business?"

No not really. One of Newts relatives is selling some of his stuff tho.

I have contacted Bill Siegle and sent some of the specs of this knife set. Never held one, but his knives always looked top notch. I hope we can work something out. :D

I found a picture of a Guam butcher knife that is very similar to the Pathfinder. Maybe these knives first inspired Dave to make the pathfinder... only he knows (I can't remember where, he told me, he was inspired to make his Pathfinder).

CHECK THIS OUT  ...
