I am huge fan of the Spyderco knife sharpening system. Primarily because with minimal practice I can put razor sharp edges on my knives and hachets, with little worry about whether I am at the right angle or if I am going to mess up the edge.

What I would like is a more mobile version of the same system to carry with me for extended wilderness outings. Even though the Spyderco sharpener isn't huge and heavy, it seems a bit much to be carrying along for extended treks.

What do you guys recommend?

I have used flat stones and steels in the past, but it is really hard maintaining a consistent angle and I would just end up messing up the nice bevel that was on the knife at home, and I doubt I could get my knife as sharp. If small sharpening stones, which is what most would carry in the wilderness, are hard to use with large knives.

i am interested also. i know that a g russell use to carry a model very similar to the Spyderco sharpmaker, it was smaller but used round stones instead. I like the triangualr stones that spyderco has cause it lets you get really close to the choils of the knife without having any dull or uneven areas.

Same principle , much smaller .

I have a couple of these ,Lansky Pocket Crock Stick , works pretty god , angle is 40 degrees if I´m not mistaken , clip it in my pocket , ready to go .

Buy the Spyderco Pro-Files (or DMT Diafolds) and practice, practice, practice....

I use the DMT Magna Guide. Diamond stones, seven different angles, packs small, almost no weight. Around $40 most places online.

Works for me.

Go down to the nearest stream, find a couple of smooth stones, and go to work.

Sometimes I just pack one of the sticks from a sharpener like a Sharpmaker, without any base.

What's the black triangular one on the right under the knives? It looks kind of interesting.
Thats an old Lansky fold-a-vee , it got two fixed angle settings , sold by Spyderco
back in 1986 for msrp $15.95 (I had to check an old spydie catalog for that) .

Folded with tsek
