Survival Knife Sheaths

Back when the Army had black spit shined boots I used quite a bit of black leather dye, I bet that would make the rawhide as dark as you want it. Chris

I went the other way. I have a Maxpedition M1 with a Frost Clipper attached to it. I like the M1, but it is over kill, too many fasteners including velcro, which I hate - too noisy.

Ha! I went in your direction, but worse! I have a Jumbo Fatboy with an Eriksson #731 plus other items! I usually use the bag to shuttle lunch to work. Maxpedition and Moras: Two great tastes that taste great together!

I have been looking around for a "survival" Sheath, which would be nothing more than a decent sheath, with a pounch to carry a multi-tool and maybe fire-starter material.

Skunk.... I'm not trying to "DIS" you or anyone else that has participated/added to this tread..... I have found it really enjoyable. One thing I would add is this "never keep all your eggs in one basket" My Grandad told me that. If you do.... what happens if you drop it (loose it). IMHO... I keep my "survival items" in different places. SAK in pocket, ax on ruck sack, 4" fixed on sheath, and so on...... Ya never know when ya might loose the one thing ya need my friend. None the less.... I still like all the sheath PSK ideas:thumbup:

Read Lewis and Clark's (abridged) journal and you will never again put all your eggs in one basket. I'd guess most of us seperate our woods tools to some degree. My SAK on a dummy cord in my right front pocket is my security blanket/lucky rabbit foot/fetish all in one.

Gibson, I have not stained it, but I don't see why you couldn't. I made a sheath this summer and it's almost pure white, but I wouldn't hesitate to throw an alcohol based leather dye at it. And I would stain it after it was dry.

I think you could make a great hawk sheath out of rawhide. The stuff is very pliable and easy to work with when wet, and it dries very hard within a couple of days.

The only problem is, when it gets wet again, it gets soft. So I would seal it, inside and out, with poly or something like that. No, it's not as tough as Kydex, but it is a fun natural material to experiment with.

As an added edit, you could take an ink pen, or magic marker, and decorate it before you seal it ;)

Also, another edit, think about this, you can make a hard sheath out of fiber glass, or even paper mache.

I hear what you are saying, but I am less likely to have it with me, if it's not all together. Especially a bare-bones set-up.
Once in a "situation" it all goes in pockets, on cords, etc.

I am thinking like this... I have a blade, with pouch, and "Stuff".
I am more likely to grab it, and have everything with me. Versus having to grab my blade, then my flint/fire stuff, then a compass....

Many survival situations don't start as a planned Camping excursions, or Wilderness hikes. If that were the case, I'd have crap stashed all over, in every pocket, in my pack, etc.

I'm looking more at a readily available set-up, that I'm more likely to strap on and have a minimum amount of equipment.

I like having back-ups, and back-ups to back-ups.
So I have a knife, sheath and firemaking with it. I'd then take my Firex2 and have it in my pack, and then my Firex3 and have it in jacket pocket, and so on.

But, in the case, I have to exit my vehicle, and grab "something" , if it's my knife sheath with bare-bones PSK stuff , then I'm ahead of only having the knife, by itself.

Did this make any sense?

Yep. I think the "one PSK vs. multiple-egg-baskets" debate is like plain edge vs. serrations -- ultimately an individual choice, and what truly works for you might not work for me.

Personally, I try to keep a 'complete' (relatively speaking) PSK with my Mora 2000 and Ericsson hatchet in my truck, another (more modest) PSK scattered around my pockets and belt, and another (more massive) PSK in my BOB.

Then, I have THREE PSKs I can scatter on the floor of my living room and "sort through" a few times every year. :D

Kydex rig??

Sounds good...Just make it a pancake type sheath and last or rivet something on the front??

hmm why didnt I think of that?

Here are a couple Ripoff sheaths that work for me and are easily separated if you don't what to carry it all.
Together.

And one more set, the big one is a Spec Ops survival sheath.

Im not trying to rip on anyone here. Although these kits are useful, I find, and this is only me, that I set one up and find I absalutly hate the look of it, and end up making a pouch for my belt. I dont know what it is about having the pouch on the sheath, But it drives me nutz.

Yeah, I was wondereing about that too. Why couldn't you mold the "pouch" however you want and rivet it up with the body of the sheath? Grommets might be a problem? Just thinking out loud...

Fonly has a point, too. I don't think I'll carry a PSK with my knife all the time, but if I wanted to really travel light, it would definitely work. I think of the sheath kit being balanced on the belt with a 1-qt canteen. As the kit gets more advanced, it becomes more of a pack that can carry a knife, rather than a sheath with a pouch. But for everday carry I much prefer simple sheaths with as low a profile as possible.

Reminds me more of what the Pirate with the ship's wheel attached to his trousers said to the bartender.

The spec ops sheath is pretty nice looking. I've been happy with the Eagle sheath, although I do wish it had an extra pocket.

How do the ripoff sheaths hold together? Lashed on with paracord?

Enderwiggin, I'll bite: What did the pirate with the ship's wheel attached to his trousers say to the bartender? :D

I have had and used the Ripoff sheaths for at least 7 years and they are tough as nails and the one with the metal clip holds great with or without a belt.
And yes I use para cord, if you've seen the Ripoffs before some of the models
have a pocket in the back that is perfect for a fixed blade sheath to be stuffed in it and secured, been working good so far. If a person didn't trust their knots I would think a heavy duty zip tie would work great also.

Gibson...that is what I was noodling bro

I will try and work up something once I get caught up somewhat to see if I am down with the idea

OK, dredging up this one again. I've got the kydex part going.
Can pretty much make whatever.

Now, need to find a good source for "decent" small pouches.

Thinking they need to be held on firm, but, also, detachable, if need be, or to move from knife to knife.

Any thoughts on pouches? Mag pouches? Maxpedition pouches?
others??
