Hello all, I'm new to the forum and I want to buy a fix blade knife that can handle ANY chore imaginable. Something that if I was stranded on an island I could use for hammering, chopping, cutting, digging whatever lol! I'd like to spend under $200...any recomendations are welcome though. I prefer 6-9inch blade with decent steel is a must...no AUS6 or AUS8 :). Thanks all...

I'd recommend Busse or Strider knives, but Busse usually runs a tad more than $200. They're almost indestructible.

I have had a few Stiders and I loved them. Busse, what kind of handles do they offer?

Welcome to the Forum Joe.

For the money, it's tough to beat the Becker Knife & Tool Brute or the Combat Bowie. Both are 0170-6C steel with 9" blades (the brute is 9.5"). You can find the Combat Bowie for under $65 and the Brute for under $100.

For under $200, you can buy both a Becker BK-9 AND a Becker BK-10 (for the "small stuff"), and still have enough $ left over to maybe buy a Spyderco Sharpmaker 204 to keep 'em sharp with.

If you live in a humid climate, try a Fallkniven A1. It's one of the trully tough stainless steel knives that are around these days. I have many knives but this is the only one that I liked so much that I eventually bought two of them. If you do a search you will find Cliff Stamp's positive review of this knife. Cliff's review was on the all VG10 version (not the newer non laminated) which you can still find in shops.

I like the Becker Brute. That seems like the toy for me. How well do Beckers handles hold up with elements such as water, dirt and fire? Are they plastic and will they melt easily? I know this sounds funny but you have to be ready for anything!

the handles shrug off dirt and water with no problem ,Fire? so what you'd still have the whole knife to work with. You can make a a pair of grip's out of wood or wrap cloth or vine's,grass bark...ect.

It's not only the knife, but the men who stand behind them.

I don't know the actual guarantees offered by a lot of manufacturers, but I do know Busse and Strider. It's a good thing to look into for the top dollar a quality item goes for.

Well, the Beckers definitely sink in water, can get lost in the dirt, and tend to get real hot in fire! J/K I think the Beckers can handle just about anything you can put it through. The handles are as durable as any other material available. I don't think you can go wrong with one of them. I like the Combat Bowie personally. Great camp knife.

Stay within your price range and get a great knife, get a Becker!! I own two and love em, have done all that you want to do with em and they are still rock solid.

Some real good choices given to consider. Another is the Fallkniven A-2. It's got an 8" blade, so it can whomp on things pretty well too! As previously stated, Fallkniven is top quality, and I saw it I think on Blade Matrix (heard mixed reviews about that site) for around $159.
