Survival Knife

If you have money try to find a Mc Williams.
If you habe midlle money try a Falknieven , or a Cordova custom survival.
If you have a limited money Cold steel will make the job correctly.

McWilliams are great knives, but theycost too much nowadays to "abuse"....I have one from 1992 or so. They are also a bear to sharpen. The Bark River knives have the convex edge. If you are hiking, there is no need to use a folder as your primary knife. Go the medium to large fixed blade route and go with carbon steel. If it is properly heat treated, you can clean up the edge on a rock:D

I would just back up your Manix with an Ontario 12" machete. Mine came with the D ring guard but I found it bothersome and cut it off. Take a file and get a real good cutting edge on it and you're good to go. I have mine lashed to a BoB.

The sheaths are chintzy but I've seen some homebrew jobs made from PVC pipe that look very sturdy.

I personally have not found a knife of any size that can outchop a machete with the same amount of effort.

Last look has the Ontario's less than 20 bucks.

That's part of the problem. They grow too close to the house and they do make some excellent fires. The leaves on those things burn like little propane torches. Scary.

Also, it becomes a problem when you can't see the grass for the Camphor Tree saplings.:D

I agree with hatchetjack. A smaller utility pared with a large chopping tool is the ideal survival combo. Even for the weight-conscience (I've done some backpacking), there are lighweight machetes (i.e., 12" Ontario) and tomahawks (generally lighter than hatchets and easier to break down and carry). I like a small bird & trout knife (I have one by Kabar) or a Victorinox Swiss Army knife for the smaller knife.
