survival knife

I am not refuting or confirming any opinion either way, i guess i was just letting Big chief know that there are some folks out there that have strong opinions on the subject.

I am certainly not making fun of any big chopper fans, my long term plans are to get one of these big bowie style choppers, use it and see what i think about it. I don't think the kukri shape of mine necessarily represents the performance of most bowie style choppers, so some time when funds permit i'll get one of the knives i mentioned and see how it stacks up.

But if I was in a "survival" situation, personally, I would want the tools most suited to the tasks I may be facing.

That's the problem, survival situations come up when you least expect it and having a knife that you can bet your life on is very important.

Almost nobody takes a tone of tools with them unless you are staying 10 feet from the car in a cabin or a tent in a campground. But if you are backpacking and hauling all of your gear for miles like up in the Mountains you wouldn't be hauling a lot of weight.

If you are 10 to 15 miles out and something happens and you are stranded, stuck for awhile then your Knife breaks you are IN TROUBLE, your main tool is broken, then your folding knife breaks too......

The Bark River golok or KSF machete. I know its not a knife, but I think they are better at survival.

no i considered a SURVIVAL KNIFE, what good is an axe or hatchet for anything but what i might need my survival knife for the least

My apologies, Big Chief, I thought you said "this knife could be used for anything including chopping down trees and splitting logs".

If you aren't going to be chopping, it seems like a 10 inch blade is unnecessary. I would suggest a smaller, easier to carry slicer...something in the 4 inch blade range like a Fallkniven F1 or Barkie Fox River for example.

It will do a better job for what it sounds you are going to be doing with the knife.

I agree. To go into a survival situation with only an axe would be foolish.

As would it be to go into a survival situation without the proper tools (whatever one feels they are). Like they say, "Fail to prepare....prepare to fail."

I didn't realize having a strong opinion on the subject different than yours was the same as making "fun of you for wanting a big knife instead of an axe or hatchet".

My bad. Like I said...I love a zombie killer as much as anybody. And I think they are excellent urban survival tools. I just happen to thing a great 4-5 inch slicer like a Mora, for example, along with an axe or hatchet make a much better "woodsy" survival kit.

Did u check out ka-bar knives? They usually have well made knives that will meet most of your needs, and for a good price.

The Becker Combat Bowie which is 9" seems like a winner to me....

1095 cro-van
9" blade
1.05 lbs
flat grind
$115.56
made in usa

Or maybe a Black KA-BAR Kukri Machete which is 11 inches?

K-Bars are OK, but they really aren't survial knife materal, they really won't take a lot of punshment. They bend too easy when really pushed, they are fine if you don't use them very hard.

I owned like 20 of them when I was in the Military (82-86) and I bent or broke all but one, and that one I never used so I sold it. They wanted us to carry them when I was in so that's why I bought so many, later one they gave us more options.

First of all, he has a price-point of 150 and he wants 10 inches. I know the regular ka-bars aren't really survival material, but they can be used as such. I hope you noticed and maybe took a look at the knife I recommended which was their becker line of knife which is supposed to be able to take alot more abuse than the standard ka-bars.

I have and love many large knives. The 10" range seems to be my favorite and the large knife has always seemed to attract me the most. That said,
my go to knives in the woods are usually a Himalayan Imports Khukuri. They are overbuilt. The forward weight makes for a great chopper, and the curved shape even makes for a very servicable draw knife. Depending on the size of khukuri the Karda (small knife) makes a useful little small chores blade.
Check them out. Not for everyone I know but they are my favorite chopping tool in the long run.
As mentioned in a previous post, the Browning competition cutter is a good knife also.
Good Luck in your search.
