I was looking for a survival knife.

Preferred specs:
6-8 inch blade
Full tang
Hard plastic sheath
I generally dislike bowie type knives
Saw back is a plus, but not necessary
Some type of impact weapon

Other than that, entertain me. ALSO, I won't give a specific price because I don't know how much these knives generally run, but the cheaper the better. I have long loved the Ontario ASEK knife, but there's no way I could drop more than $100 on a knife right now.

That's about it.

Hi
Save your money my friend. You cant put a price on survival!!
Cheak out Fallkniven .
German Expedition Knife from Eickorn. D-2 steel.
BRKT Bravo range.
:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I think you can get a saw back machete pretty cheaply.

If you want a 6-8" with hard plastic sheath and under $100 I'd recommend a recon scout.

+1 for Fallkniven by the way. And BRKT for that matter although you are definitely into $150-200 territory there.

Eickhorn Expedition is violently overpriced for what it is, like all their models.
I'd take the F1 instead, much more suitable for actual woods use.

In Australia the F-1 costs about 200 give or take 10 bucks (Aussie dollars)
the expedition knife cost 255 Aussie dollars.

The fallkniven A-1 about $300 AUD .
Expedition knife $270 including Postage

BRKT bravo-1 about $300 AUD with postage

Priced well i think.
But to get the Eickhorn from Germany $370 AUD
:D

Jman I just bought a Fallkniven A1 for 160USD plus 12 postage from Knivesshipfree. Buy from the US and pay maybe 50-75% of the price here in OZ. Don't worry about customs unless you buy folders or double edged blades.

Jman - slightly off topic - do you find the stainless F1 makes a big difference in Tassie? I imagine the rainforest and damp conditions can rust a 1095 blade pretty quickly.

Well ofcourse, but I was saying that the expedition knife is overpriced (in my opinion ofcourse) for what you get, in relation to materials etc. And the handle seems very uncomfortable.

Yes & no. I have a old carbon OLD TIMER that went rusty because
i could not dry the leather sheath. (bush walking for 8 days in snow).

I like stainless because i have a large colection easyer to service.
I like carbon & stainless.

Yes i could be uncomfortabe . i let you know next week when it comes.
The rugged looking handle is what i like on this knife.
Reminds me when i was in the army & our section leader wired a Star picket to the M-60 as a bayonet. i smile every time i think of that:D

lets keep on topic

A1!! Fits your needs well. Just no sawback. Or the Bark River Bravo 2. Short of the Busse route those 2 blades are perfect and lead the pack in this category.

This is the one you clearly want. Its the Ramster Survival Kit knife. Sawback, the metal butt can be used as an impact weapon (very important!), its got all the necessary gear in the handle, and its around 40 bucks US. Its perfect.

How's that for staying on topic.

Here is my thoughts on a knife. I have a very large collection of custom knives and about 20% of them are sawback survival knives. I have always liked the "Rambo" knives with the hollow handle and sawbacks. But as I have become older and wiser ( with the help of many comments by forum members)I have learned that a true survival knife is a full tang knife and the best is without a sawback. If you really need to survive you need a knife that will not fail. Saw back knives are not good for batoning and do create a weak area if you need to. Same with the hollow handle. I would suggest for your price range a Ranger RD-7 in 5160 steel. There is not much that you can't throw at that knife that it could not handle.I will continue to collect "survival" knives but, if I really need to survive give me a hunk of 5160 and I know I will have a knife that should get me there and back.
