Hi all, im looking for a good survival knife for around 80-100 bucks, I have my eyes on the Becker BK7 and the Ontario RAT7. which is better? are there any better ones for that amount of money? any help would be awesome, thanks

Personally, I'd go for the Becker. Outstanding knife for the price (or even twice the price).

this all depends on what you mean by the term survival knife... I suppose. the becker 7 is a great knife...however if you are looking to chop with it you'll be left wanting... also if you are looking to do fine woodworking with it it will take some getting used to as well... still it is a great blade I had one and used it allot .. but prefer a 12inch convexed machete
However despite the negative politics the best knife I've handled int hat size range.. is the Cold steel Recon scout.. it is blade heavy for a 7.5 inch bladed knife and actually chops fairly secent for the size.. if you saw off the back guard it has a usable choil which allows you to choke up for finer work. Good luck in your quest

thanks a lot guys, im leaning more towards the Becker, i like it a lot, what about its big brother the BK9? what im looking for is a good all around knife, right now i have a Ka Bar U.S. army with a 7 inch blade that iv been using for camping and wilderness adventures.

if you are set on a becker go with the bk7 for an allaorounder or better yet the Bk companion
the BK 9 is great but its. a niche chopper...I wouldn't want top clean a trout with it.. although it could be done

For an all around knife I like the Becker BK-2: heavy enough to chop with, short enough for finer control. The BK-9 is a great chopper, but a little difficult to control for finer work. Fortunately, both the BK-7 and BK-9 come with the BK-13 included with the purchase. The BK-13 is a smaller blade that excels at the fine work. It all depends on what you need the knife to do.

I think the BK-7 really is a versatile knife for it's size and gives you a good bit to work with, however I have a very hard time viewing the BK-9 as a "survival" knife. It's a great chopper and handles well but in my opinion the point leaves much to be desired in a "survival" situation.

You may have to be a little more specific about the environment you are anticipating "surviving" in, and the tasks you intend for the knife to perform. A lot of us see a "survival knife" simply as what ever sharp tool we will happen to have on us if and when we find ourselves in a survival situation. If you pay attention here you will learn that this encompasses a very broad spectrum of cutting implements.

i agree with the rc-6, however if you want a thicker knife check out the rc-5, all of rat cutlery knives are awesome for the price range you are talking about

I think if you prize your knife for cutting rather than chopping that Ontario RAT7 in D2 will outclass everything else mentioned so far.

well i do a lot of camping up in maine, my friend has a cabin there and we camp for a week or 2 at a time, so i need something that i do some wood working with to make shelters and stuff, but something i can use to cut a few inches of wood.

Are you dead-set on that length? I only ask because you can generally get a log mote done comfortably with a smaller blade. RAT RC4 or Falkniven F1 come to mind, as do moras like the m2k.

I don't have a Falkniven, but they sure look like good knives. Good recommendations Spooky .

Of course SEALman, you could contact Stomper or Koyote or Doug or Bryan Breeden or any of the awesome makers on the forums and get an outstanding custom blade for a few dollars more. I think people overlook the custom makers too quickly. If you go with a knife that is rough finished, many of the makers have pretty reasonable prices--especially considering the quality of the product.

You only live once, might as well have a knife you really like.

no, not really set on anything, right now im just not sure which would work better for what i want to do, the rat rc-6, ontario rat 7 or the becker BK2

I dunno, i want a really good knive, and the BK-2 is nice, but i like the RC-6, great knive and a great sheath.

I would get one of the knives in the RAT cutlery line, unless you need something that is an excellent chopper. The RC 6 can chop, but it is not very good at it.
