Everyone likes to choose a pump shotgun for low cost, simplicity and dependability. I like semi-automatics. I've been using a Beretta 390 for many very hard years in the duck marshes and it has never let me down. It has an aluminum receiver and is plenty light. My best duck-hunting buddy bought a new 870 last season and he had troubles with it (in defense of the 870, I'll add that it was a new 3 1/2" chamber version, which might not be as dependable as the old 3" chamber version). The Beretta (and lots of newer semis) have a self-regulating gas system so you can shoot anything from light skeet loads to heavy waterfowl magnums or buckshot loads without a hitch and without any adjustments.
For a rifle, I'd probably pick an AR-15 lower receiver with a 5.56 carbine upper and 6.8SPC (great deer caliber) upper and I'd throw in the little Colt .22LR conversion kit for the 5.56 and I'd have three calibers in the space and weight of 1 1/2 rifles.
Both of those uppers are flat tops and accept a scope and an EOTech holographic sight on quick-detach mounts as well as having back-up iron sights mounted.
If long-range work was going to be on the agenda, I'd throw in a Winchester Model 70 in .300 WinMag.

I guess for me the question would be what is the contex.
There is alot of talk of this going around so ill give a list.
If im out for a month in the bush and need to feed me and my friends.
I say a
.22 rifle prolly a 10-22 or 77-22
a 12 ga shotgun ( 870)
and an 30-06 bolt gun.
If i need to go to town any backwoods store should have any of the ammo. And with thoes three ill be able to do most anything.
In all honesty if it is a survival thing id be wacking deer in the head with my .22 if at all possible.
Am i running and gunin taking on the zombies or the invading chetnian rebles
