survival multitool Gerber vs Leatherman

Take a look at SOG's line up of multitools. You won't a tougher multi anywhere. I love my powerlock.

I agree, Victorinox, Leatherman, Sog, and Gerber are good tools. It is personal preference and they all have their good points.

IMO;
Victorinox-Busse "like"
Leatherman-Spyderco "
Sog-Benchmade "
Gerber-......Gerber! (but fun tools)

But for EDCing I reach for my Victorinox. I live in a humid climate so I need a good finish that'll last, but I do like em all.

Swisstool. I own them all and that's the fall back for me.

I've had several Leatherman models. They do the job, but the Victorinox Swisstools (I have an origonal Swisstool and a Spirit) have banished the LMs to various dawers and toolboxes.

Here's why I prefer Vic tools:

1. Sensible array of implements
2. All tools can be opened without unfolding the whole contraption.
3. All tools lock
4. The fit and finish is tighter and more refined.

I had a Gerber several years ago. I pinched my hand between the handles(in really cold weather), anleft a blood blister about an inch long. I have been carrying a Leatherman ever since.

my Wave has been the best, wired a house with it, used it many many times in the woods and worked good overall.

I have ab original Leatherman and but recently received a Wave. Wow, the new Leather man are great. The blades are sharp, they lock and you can get to them without opening the tool. I have actually used the tiny screw driver, and the add on bit set had the star driver for my taillight and man that serrated sheepsfoot was awesome breasting out the 60 dove last September. I really like this knife. I have probably a dozen SAK's and have no doubt their tools are as good as their other products. To me as Leatherman has served me well, I am being loyal. I also have Squirt that rides on a keychain with a 2 bladed SAK and a tiny Streamlite.

I have had a gerber for several years and never had any problem's, is gerber now importing from china, because mine in from the usa.

I have an early Gerber which works very smoothly with one hand. I use it for fishing (light tackle/small stream) only because I don't trust it to do real work. I gave a couple of later models away as presents. They were barely one handers. One broke soon after. I returned it to Gerber. I did not have a pleasant experience although they replaced it after a week or so (I lived in Portland.) I've carried and used a Leatherman Wave for years and like it. Can't comment on the Swisstool.

I love the Leatherman *XT* stuff. I love a good set of pliers, and it has two good quality blades. It is a little bulky, but I EDC it and have a hard time picking something else.

is the victorinox spirit good even though it doesnt have a straight blade?

It wouldn't bother me, but some people don't like it. Since you are using this as a wilderness multitool, you will (hopefully) be carrying a larger more robust knife with you and the swisstool blade will not used alot. I also happen to like Victorinox's serrations which are on the front instead of the back leaving a PE portion for carving and notching, they cut alot better than a PE but they still cut cleanly unlike the more aggresive serrations on most folders. I can shave the hair off my arm with my serrated vics and the sak steel is easy to sharpen. I usually avoid serrations like the plague but I would serrate all my saks if I had a choice.

leartherman charge ti... still knife nut at heart so two blades with one and opening while closed and better steel than the wave:-)

in the Spirit S version, it has "2" blades, one is PE
in place of the scissors (no scissors).

I like this since I never use the scissors.

Here's my 2 cents worth. I bought the LM Wave specifically because you can: one hand open the knife, both smooth and serrated. ALL the tools lock open and the most important...at least for me, is the fact that you can get it with a pocket clip! Once I discovered pocket clips I can't go back. Instant access and I KNOW exactly where it is.

I turned mine into a plain-edge quite easily by beveling both sides on a DMT diamond hone. I was unwilling to give up the scissors by getting the S version.
