I recently grew fond of this way to cariyng survival items, being a neck knife, a small compass, firesteel, whistle, 15' of 550 cord rolled up & duct taped to keep it in a solid roll and a small matches container filled with dry tinder and 3 spare matches, 3 fish hooks, led sinkers.

As a knife I use the AG Russel wooldswalker, comes with a kydex neck sheath, very handy little blade, great backup to my 4'' bushcraft knife and case pocket knife

on the back of the kydex sheath, I glued a small mirror, that can be used for signaling, shaving, healing wounds in blind spots and given the time I'm sure I can find more use for it.

What holds the necklace together is a piece of 550 cord with about 15' of cord rolled up with duct tape,
the cord can be used for shelter, making a sling, fishing line etc...
the duct tape can be used for wounds, repairing gear, etc...

Since I've put this little kit together, I've been going on hikes more often, and finding that I appreciate the time I'm there more then when I was hauling a bag on my back, Even if your pack is light, there comes a point in time where your shoulders get annoyed of the straps and just want to rest.

sure you don't have the convenience of being able to haul bigger items with you, but I've found a classic journey man shoulder pouch, which is big enough to hold a foldable saw, couple snacks, my whiskey flask, pipe, tobacco, a nalgene water bottle a long with plenty of room to store my mil spec poncho (can be used for shelter), some spare bags (2x small ziplocs, 3x heavy duty XL garbage bags) is plentyful and allows for a great stay. Things are also less suspcious, say for example your in a national park, where

Simple and effective.

One thing I require in a small kit is that it is in my pocket and lightweight (3oz.). It must be simple enough to pull out my light or band aid without everything else falling out from being packed so tight. I used to see how much I could cram in those Altoid tins but realized I was sticking things in that really wouldn't make too much of a difference like paper clips or tie-ties. Even band aids to me are not as good as ductape or superglue. I have needed a band aid in the past just to have it fall off becouse I was dirty or sweating. When I was in Peru NO BAND-AID WORKED!!! Too much moisture for a lousy band aid. Unless you are real clean and dry and your cut is in a perfectly straight part of your body you won't have too much luck with a band aid in a real emergency or survival situation. This is not to put any kits or beliefs down I just know that the subject easily gets into the "How much more little nick nacks I can put into my kit than you". I like things simple. I need them to be or it just won't be practical. Now I know I must have the smallest mini-kit ever above but I am trying to show the alternative to the 20 items or more line of kits.
Your whistle, compass and light should be on you were you can get to it fast. If you see an animal on the trail you will use the whistle to try to scare it off (if it is threatening) or signal people in your party to come help you. Light fades fast and as your eyes adjust to the darkness you don't always realize that its time for a light. Then you go dig it out of your kit and it is hard to not let the rest of the contents fall out. My kit seems to satisfy me but I know it is not for everyone. As long as I have 3 or more ways of fire and signaling, 2 lights and two knives I feel pretty good about spending the night outside. Besides it is a Dayhike/Survival kit not a live in the woods kit. Blah blah blah blah!!!!!!
Have fun with it.

Since I'm search challenged on here, can anyone link to the couple/few threads where you fine people have used the Becker Necker to rig kits up on that?

It's really any outstanding idea. Hopefully the Necker will return soon.
