Survival Nutrition

Bird eggs :thumbup::thumbup:
Of course this is very seasonal. The eggs have calories, protein and most trace nutrients.

Balanced diets are needed for long term survival (months), but simple calories will get you through weeks! Like others said - protein, fats from bugs and game; carbs from tubor plants like cattails can be a ready supply of calories. For game, eating the whole animal rather than just muscle will supply more nutrients. Many carnivores also eat the stomach contents of the herbivores they consume.

I think Chris M. suffered from some form of long term mental disease. I also believe he learned how to partially cover up the symptoms of this disease like many with mental disease do.

I also believe if Chris M. would have walked out of Alaska alive he would have continued his life until some other form of destruction took his life or an other's unless some medical treatment successfully worked for him.

Anything to back this hypothesis?

I was more under the impression that he was a suburban, rich kid with too much theory and not enough practice. Couple that with an innate bravery and you have the making for a person who was going to be a) a leader of some kind and b) preternaturally disposed to be self destructive to martyrdom if nothing else came around. So I see your second point but the first is where I am having a bit of an issue.

Yes, but make sure you cook them because they can also be a prime carrier of some diseases.

From reading the story, it seemed as though he had quite of bit of experience under his belt. But, from those instances it could have just been a little lucky to survive, as someone mentioned if he would have survived this, he would likely have died else where (no disrespect). But to last over 100 days is pretty impressive I think.

A few have mentioned eating bugs, is this generally a safe practice? Are there bug eating identification books? Seems like mushrooms are hit or miss, are bugs this way too? Or not so much an issue of eating poisonous bugs?

Hey naked,

Try this.

Chef, I really don't want to sidetrack this very good thread about nutritional needs and how to get them in longer term survival situations so maybe I could PM you about my observations on Christoper M. Plus his family and friends may read this some day and possibly could get hurt again.

However his situation and outcome are important as a good study and do apply to this thread.
