As it is often doing it is raining here today so as usual I'm left experimenting with something. Some time back I put together what i referred to as my "survival" sheath. Since I have recently run across and been given some really cool pieces of kit I have done an upgrade to version 1.5...will do version 2.0 once i find or make the right pouch to finish it.

A friend sent me some cool additions to my kit. Among other things he sent some steri strips, which I've heard about but never used, a Silva match safe with a compass built in, some small plastic tubes with threaded caps, and a couple of small fishing kits.

I have recently gotten the matchcap from EXOTAC which is so far my preferred match safe but the Silva is the storage cylinder I have been looking for to use for other parts of my kit. I am able to get a couple of the steri strips rolled up inside it along with one of the cylinders and still have some room so I could use the cylinder to store some PJ cotton balls or something.

The new Silva case will fit in the pouch with the matchcap, and the nano striker and still leave me room to slide some small thin things in also.

and when pushed all the way down (they're not in this photo) there is some room left at the top which means I could put something else there or down in the bottom and the cases on top.

What I really want is a bigger pouch...thicker not wider if I can get it or make it....then I could add the fishing kit as well as another small tine the same size (for more first aid supplies a signal mirror, and a small magnifying glass) both sealed in small plastic bags with a small desiccant pack. Then I will have A good large-ish knife for cutting and chopping chores, 30 feet of braided line for cordage, a small comprehensive first aid kit, redundant fire starting capability, a well stocked fishing kit with even more cordage and a small knife included all in one small, easily portable package.

steristrips are great, they are kinda like sutures, but without the needle and string :).

I cut my palm near my thUMB to the bone with a Mora, some iodine with steristrips and it healed right up.

Thanks for the info on this, I've heard they are great and I've been wanting something portable than a bottle of "new skin".

I gotta say.... part of this statement is a little disconcerting.

Wouldn't you be worried that if you lost that one piece of kit - you had nothing?

TF

Not really, I tend to go modular and never put all my eggs in one basket. That would just be my secondary kit after what's in my pack. I use out of the pack first, and then there will always be more stuff in my pockets as a minimal back up.

Misty, what is that pouch? Have you looked at the County Comm CSS case? If those are too small, consider a grenade pouch. Finally, you can always have Scott over at SKT Industries make one to your specs.

Lol, it is an amalgamation of cannibalized parts....Ka-Bar kydex sheath, thigh strap from a Gerber LMF Infantry, and the pouch is from an M-9 bayonet.

Thanks I'll look into those. Sounds like I may just need to go have a talk with Scott if I can actually have the exact pouch I want made. Thank you for that info!

That is a neat way of having an extra kit with you. I like having pouches on sheaths but I never think of adding my own pouch. Maybe I will do it with an upcoming purchase.

Thanks for sharing.

Very cool little fishing kit. I have a few of those tins donated to me from Rupestris at our 2009 Winter get together in MI. I use them for tinder, but the fishing kit makes a lot of sense!

I like it :)

yeah steri-strips have made butterfly bandages almost obsolete

I've got a Silva match safe, I should say had- it's my wife's now after I got my K&M :)- it's a nice safe, the K&M is a little nicer IMO

Maxped has several smaller pouches that might fit your needs, I'm setting up a small knife kit around their Barnacle pouch- not overly large

Thanks man, I always wished the pouch on my first survival knife was bigger. Then when I got my first M-9 it dawned on me I could add a pouch to almost any sheath if I put some thought into it. This sheath just worked out really good and works with several of my knives, I may have to get Bryan to make a knife that will fit it too.

Thanks Ken, I like the way John set this one up much better than the other one I have. I know not everyone would want a fishing kit but there is so much water here and so many fish that I have always had some sort of fishing kit.

Cool, I thought they'd be better than the new skin because they would actually hold the wound closed. The best thing about the new skin is that it is also an antiseptic...just not practical for a small kit in that glass bottle it comes in.

I know that feeling, the missus has inherited a lot of my older kit. This Silva does well. I left it with matches in it in a glass of water for hours with no leaking.

I'll look at the maxped pouches thanks.

Where did you get the tiny plastic bottles with the threaded caps?

They came from a friend who works in the medical field...I have no idea where he got them ;)

Good looking kit Brian, building survival kits fun to do. You just never know when they might come in handy. Them Steri strips really are a neat type of tape for closing wounds.

Bryan

Those little capped tubes look like what we use in our research labs. I don't know where you would get them locally, but I would hazard a guess that any online lab supply company would sell them.

Thanks Bryan. I may talk to you more about that earlier knife patter we discussed and sent back and forth. That design happens to work well with this sheath too.

Hmmm, I hadn't thought about that. I wonder if there are any just a little larger out there somewhere.

LOL. I meant thumb. WTF keyboard typing slip. I was probably thinking, "these are a great thing to have" while typing thumb.

In addition to steri-strips, why not superglue too? They work well for closing smaller wounds, and you can get medical grade superglue for larger wounds.

Ha, that's cool man, I tend to combine two words together sometimes when I talk so I thought I knew what you meant...just couldn't resist throwing that out there lol.

I keep a bottle of new skin in my truck...in my work it's good to have around... so I've started storing it in my pack with my compression bandages and I think it really is nothing more than medical grade super glue with an antiseptic added. I just like the idea of having these along too for holding wounds closed and they weigh practically nothing.

got thinking if your going to use the Silva as a FAK, you could use the little tube for meds (aspirin/tylenol/antihistamine/anti-diarrhea,prescription) or fill it w/ a neopsorin or the like

OR maybe a stout needle w/ thread

OR like you said, some tinder :)

it is a neat size little tube

^ geez that place is a cornucopia of little storage bits- check their tin section out!

thanks for posting that :)
