Survival Sheath Upgrade, Version 1.5

Too bad a lot of them only come in huge quantities. Perhaps a group buy is in order. . .

exactly what I was thinking- a 100 of those small tins is $45- @ .45 each that's a pretty good deal- if we could find enough folks- I'd be good for ten, only ninety to go :D

same deal w/ the vials

Which ones are you thinking about? I like the 1oz with screw on lids myself but may be interested in some other ones too.

.

:) mtwarden I thought that I would share, I found it last week looking for vials too. Pritch, you are right the HUGE quantity issue is not so awesome, hopefully there is another place that has similar stuff but in smaller lots.

Now I know they do. I just ordered 2 of the .5 oz tins with screw on lids and 1 of the 1 oz tins same type. the shipping was twice the cost of the tins but still much better than buying 100 of them and still well under $10.00 shipped UPS

.

well I ordered a few tins- had to play w/ my cart to keep the postage at 4.95 (if it went too high it bumped to UPS at 9.95)

I was hoping they had the little plastic vials, but they don't- in glass, but not in plastic

maybe a group buy on vials :D

I use 15ml nalgene bottles in my kits, but I get them cheap from MEC.
Steri-stips are great for face cuts and stuff, but they only stick well to dry skin. I generally clean the area as best I can, close it with the strips, then put antibiotic ointment on top (don't want the ointment in the wound, it slows healing and may add to the scaring) then I tape gauze over top to absorb any small weeping. I also carry a few different sizes so that I can get the most use out of a pack, once they are open they seem to not work as well, and besides, it beats the whole idea of them being sterile.

We used to be able to get those as Mint containers at our local supermarket (just as wel I horded enough for me & my 2 kids :D )

As a matter of fact, I'll be using one those tommorow to hold some flies for a fly fishing trip for carp (I'll post some pics when I get back )

Take care mate :thumbup::thumbup:

Kind regards

That is a neat way of having an extra kit with you. I like having pouches on sheaths but I never think of adding my own pouch. Maybe I will do it with an upcoming purchase.

Thanks for sharing.

What? You mean you never once thought "Hey, this kydex sheath is cool. But it's missing something. But what? I know! A pouch to hold a survival kit!":p

Seriously I never thought of that either. I am surprised we haven't seen it more often. Sometimes I'll carry a knife that has a Nylon sheath for it. When I would prefer to carry a different knife. But I carry the one with the Nylon sheath since it has a pouch I can add survival items too. Now after seeing this I intend to rig up a pouch on a Kydex sheath.

Thanks for sharing:thumbup:

I have a nite Ize pock-its that will work. I just checked on it. My only issue? Some of these Nylon pouches are overly built and too heavy duty. Good to know I can rely on it. Problem is the pouch takes up more space and weight then it's contents:(

Thanks, glad you like the idea. This one has been ...and still is really...a work in progress, and it works with multiple knives. Below are some pics and excerpts from the original thread I did on it a year or so ago/

This is what the KA-BAR kydex sheath looked like out of the box. It is easy to modify

I first cut the belt loop and sewed in a side release webbing buckle.

Then I wanted to add a pouch from another knife sheath for a fire starter and some other things, but the slots in the sheath were too narrow, and in the wrong place for that because the pouch would interfere with releasing the retainer strap so I had to make the slots a little larger, moving them down some also. I started out by clamping the sheath down and drilling some holes in it, in line with the slots.

***

Then I take a small saw blade and connect the holes, and rasp down the sides of the new section of the slots and now the pouch fits

PICT0317.jpg
***

This is what it has in it so far, a mag stick, a firesteel, some fish hooks, and some fatwood slivers, there is room for split shots and some fishing line.

and now that I have cut the magstick down some, there is room for some larger pieces of fatwood if needed. I plan on wrapping some braided nylon twine around the sheath for use in shelter building, snares, or fishing...., but all I have at the moment is white so I'll either get some green or stain the white with some walnut shells. Then this and my canteen will be my basic life support system.

I wanted to add some cordage to this sheath so I looked around at nylon twines and cords for something small but strong. At Rock Creek Outfitters I found some small fifty foot rolls of some gold nylon braided utility cord by "Adventure 16" that is relatively small but is rated at 200 lb test. They don't take up much room whole, and they were just under $3.00 a roll. So now I've cut some notches in the lower part of the sheath to accommodate it and managed to wrap twenty feet of cord and secure it to the sheath.

Then I sewed some to the flap of the pouch and double wrapped it not only securing the flap but further securing the pouch to the sheath.

So now I am going to shave down the bar of magnesium some, remove some of the excess plastic on the handle of a scout model firesteel, and then I'll have enough room for a plastic "card" wrapped with some fishing line and some lures, and a small signal mirror. Then just between this knife and the paracord bracelet I wear I will have the abilities to; cut....,whatever, start several fires for warmth, cooking or signaling, find direction, open tin cans, fish with either a bated hook, a lure, or make a gill net and have a combined total of 32 feet of cordage for shelter making, building a small raft or other contingencies.

This end result is the product of the tests of several knives and sheath systems and a combination several parts taken from the sheath systems, and added items. I want to add some snare wire to the sheath as well. I had to do some more cutting on it to get the new leg strap on.

In the spirit of "put up or shut up", there's even a video to show there's no trick photography involved :D

That was an awesome post Mick!

BTW, I just got in my tins from Specialty Bottle in yesterday. Ordered on the 21 and delivered on the 25. They came even quicker than I expected and they are exactly what I wanted. I'll post some pics later.
