Survival shooting/gun test

This is a great, fun idea. I'll subscribe to this thread so I can find it in the months ahead. The earliest I'll be able to get to the range is going to be early Oct. I'm curious to see how I can do with my handed down Winnie 62. That's the only takedown .22 I own.

Did we decide for sure on which target to use, and at what scale?

The black groundhog target that is shown here is the one I was thinking about. I just printed it out on a 8x10 and it seems about right for a small game target. Actually a little bigger than the ground squirrels we have around here but close enough. The groundhog stands about 9 1/4" tall and the white bulls are 3/4" and 1 1/2" as stated on the target.

Ok finsihed shoot less than 2 hours ago:
6 shots, 25 yards, Federal .22 36gr. HP from a 3 1/4 inch Bbl Heritage Rough Rider Single action. Slow two hand fire from iron sights. only one hit but it was in the center white the rest strung out horizontally

BTW I am still learning the gun; its really picky about ammo.

First off, my printer settings must be off. The bullseye on the head of mine is just over 1/4".

Anyway, took 5 shots with a CZ452 Scout w/Weaver 2x7 scope, using CCI subsonic HPs.

Got just barely over a 3/4" group. Included a ruler so you would know I'm not BSing about the print size. I wouldn't win any shooting competitions but I think I could stay fed.

I'm going shooting in about 45 minutes and will try this out. Got 5 targets printed out to practice with. Normally I shoot at old pop cans, plastic cups, empty ammo boxes and clay Pigions. Should be interesting to see how well I do with my Pistol and Rifle. Will take pictures of the results.

I hope you let airgunners in i just got a new rws 34 im sighting in tommarow. I dont have a working printer but ill try to print it tommarow.

I'll try this as soon as I get the chance... I can shoot in my backyard sometimes but school keeps me busy.

When I was a kid I used to shoot airguns every day (iron sights)... I usually shot at acorns (<25 yards) ;).

I think I'll do this test with the .22lr pistol. I don't think it's accurate past 10 yards (fixed sights) but will try at 10 and 25 yards and post results.

I printed some of the varmit targets out on 8.5"x11" Paper and took them to the range with me this afternoon. Using my Henry .22 Lever gun (H001T Frontier model) at 40 feet I'd say I did okay for not practicing much this year.

I shot a total of 5 shots into the target, taking a break inbetween each shot and moving a few feet down the firing line each time. I did this to simulate shooting a Woodchuck and it shows that even though I am able to hit minute of wood chuck while standing, I should practice standing more often. Kneeling I would have done much better but didn't want to because if I'm in the woods going after an aninal, by the time I'm in a kneeling possion, the animal might have been scared off or just moved. You'd be on a time limit so I practiced rasing the rifle, pulling back the hammer, taking a breath then firing.

Again, I can tell that I need to practice this since I mostly practice from a bench or kneeling, but still I think I did okay. So here are the pictures showing my target:

First shot was a little hight but dead center

2nd shot was to the left a little and just above center

3rd shot a lot lower and farther to the left. Not close enough to the center IMO

4th shot on the right side and on center

5th shot was just below the 1st shot and a little to the left. Finally in the white! :)

Whatcha guys think? After that I blasted pop cans and Sunflowers. Can't wait for our next trip out to try this again.

Forgot to ask, can the airgunners get in on this also ??

Personally I dont care what you use, air gun or 50 bmg. Just use whatever you would use to put meat on the table.
This whole exercise was intended to be fun and educational for everyone.

This gave me an excuse to try a gun range I've never shot at before. I was planning on doing 50 yards with the rifle, but the dang place only has 25 yard ranges.

So, I did 5 shot groups at 25 yards three different ways. On the bench with the rifle supported front and back, on a sandbag with only the front supported, and finally something I've never tried before, standing up and supporting one hand on a stationary vertical object (a concrete column in this case) and supporting the front of the rifle on that hand. The first two positions were too easy at that range. The one hand support position was surprisingly accurate as well. I'd be confident to use that out to 50-75 yards.

edit: oh yeah, the rifle I used was the CZ452.

Finally I shot a few groups off-hand with my Beretta Neos .22 pistol fitted with a red-dot sight at 40 feet. I need more practice with this gun, obviously.

Here are a couple targets showing all four types of shooting I did.
