Survival Simulation Diet. Don't try this at home.

Dy, are you taking pictures of yourself as you go to document the weight loss?

Nope. The wife and I are always taking pictures of each other at events and outdoors so I have plenty of before pictures. I'm sure we'll take some more along the way on our outings, but I'm not planing on taking specific "Progress Pictures". I'll take some pictures of me at the end for comparison.

Update:

Yesterday afternoon was rough. Shortly after I wrote my post, I started getting worse and worse. My boss walked by at about 3Pm and said, "You look like I did this past weekend. Go home. I'm not going to be here tomorrow so I need you tip top." So, I left. When I got home, I started getting worse. My throat and sinuses were on fire. Still, I didn't want to give up my workout. I figure that when you're on your own and have to survive, the world doesn't care if you're sick. You have to keep pushing. I put on my workout clothes and headed to the gym. Hot girl was there again. :) For my workout, I did the elliptical machine for 2 miles, squats, some more leg stuff, and all the usual weight sets. Surprisingly, I felt ten times better after I did it. My throat and sinuses still had flames shooting out of them, but everything else was great. All the stuff that gets released when you work out made all of my body aches and stuff go away. Last night I had a little bit of tuna, some leafy stuff and a little bit of egg, along with of course a healthy dose of vitamin C. Today, I feel much better. Still pretty sickly, but my throat has cleared up a lot. Now it just most feels like aches and sinusy stuff. So far so good. I have a checkup with the doctor tomorrow. I still miss beer.

I'm sure the people at the gym really appreciate you being there. I know I would like to get sick, not be able to work out, get my family sick, get my co workers sick, and miss work - especially with all the economic worries now.
Keep it up.

What?

That is the most assinine thing I have heard in a while?

What's next, Dy has become the reason for the economic meltdown?

I guess he better not go get a cup of coffee at starbucks or use cash either?

Geez!

Yup. You get a sore throat, you go into quarintine.

The world according to dexter.

Hold on here, you guys are misinterpreting my post. The first line said:
'I'm sure the people at the gym really appreciate you being there." I don't know how you get to I'm telling DY not to go to the gym.

I also said: "I know I would like to get sick, not be able to work out, get my family sick, get my co workers sick, and miss work - especially with all the economic worries now."

What that means is that by getting everyone sick we can focus on what really is important in life - our health and family - and not focus so much on all the worries and talk about the economy. Just think about spending some quality time at home with your sick family.

I even said at the end of my post: "Keep it up."

Dy is spreading the news to everyone he meets about being aware of what can happen in a survival situation - the spreading of infections - so get ready.

By going to the gym while sick he is doing the same thing that restaurant workers are doing that don't wash their hands after going to the toilet - spreading the word - stay home and eat with your family.

Think positive guys.

He went to the gym even though "When I got home, I started getting worse. My throat and sinuses were on fire." This shows his dedication.

I say it again DY- Keep it up.

HAHAHA. Sickness is good for ya. It helps your body become tougher by subjecting it to harmful germs and thus stimulating the immune system.

UPDATE:

Got back from the checkup a little while ago. Doc says I'm still in the green 5x5, other than my cold of course. He offered a shot to push it out REAL quick, but I declined. I'm on the downslope so it's no big deal. He stressed as much as he could, like several other people, that a daily multivitamin is a really good idea. I'm still not going to take them yet. As I said in the beginning, I have yet to find a multivitamin tree in the bush, so it's not on the diet.

Last night for dinner, I had a little bit of chicken, some small leafy stuff and a very special treat... a few white seedless grapes. Man were those things tasty. It never fails to amaze me how delicious food gets when you're not eating it. Also did the usual workout last night. Hot girl was there again. These two women flew up to me jabbering about some kind of free meal thing that the gym was putting on last night, I'm talkin right up in my personal bubble. The taller one was a horrible close talker and was literally crowding my face. I said I didn't know aything about it and then they got kind of rude. Plus she has some hella stinky breath. I literally had to say, "I need you to back up about three steps please." Then I explained to her that I don't attend any of the social functions provided by the gym and because of that, I am not up to date with any of said functions. Ask someone else. Normally I would go out of my way to help someone find the information they seek, but these two women were just incredibly rude and crappy. I hope they didn't find their free meal last night. I hope they were forced to eat something crappy instead. Certainly smelled like their diet had previously consisted of poop covered shit.

Anyways, ONWARD!

Dylside, your project is becoming like some absorbing novel or series, we are all very interested in your progress, keep it up.

Still think you should take a basic vitamin tablet, it really helps with immunity. In winter time in the wilds you likely wouldn't be able to find fruits etc to give yourself the necessary vitamin defence. You had those tasty grapes the other day for instance, and when fruit is good it's really excellent.Look at it like an exercise in minimalist but QUALITY eating where you cut out the obnoxious crap and survive and actually get fitter on a healthier and smaller intake.

As for those women with dog-breath(sorry canine owners)it's probably because they've been starving themselves and gulping down some vile protein supplement. My hairdresser is a very beautiful young woman who is really 'fit' but she often goes on fasts and liquid only diets, her smile is white and cute but her breath is NOT when she's doing that!

which means that no matter how much she appears to be "taking care of herself," she really isn't taking care of herself...

Heh, bad breath usually only lasts a day or two on a cleansing fast. You have to have proper oral hygeine.

I'm still suggesting the basic children's vitamin. Especially in winter. Locally, winter means foraging for leafy greens and peas and carrots and radishes, etc. So the forage diet is VERY rich in vitamins, especially since the less nutrient heavy fruits are less a part of the diet in percentage. If I knew you were getting 4 ounces of mixed dark greens and a carrot a day, I'd retract on the multivitamin- they don't grow on trees. I do keep some in various kits.

My mixed greens have consisted of carrots, broccoli, lettuce, tomatoes, snap peas, and onion. If you guys REALLY want me to, I'll start taking a multivitamin.

UPDATE:

Yesterday was a lot better. The sickness is going away pretty good now. I'm still a little snotty today, but it is ten times better than I was Thursday. Last night, I did my workout. I did all the weights just fine, but for some reason (probably just because I've been sick) I could only do half my running and cardio workout. I just got to a point where I knew I couldn't go anymore without hurting myself. After the workout, I had my dinner, which consisted of a small bit of chicken (that was left over from last night) and a big carrot. For the wife, I made cube steak and gravy with a side of Romano cheese mashed potatoes. The whole time I was cooking I was thinking, "F@#$ this experiment. I could just eat of this right now. It smells so good!", but I restrained myself. I swear it might as well have been held in front of me by Lucy Lu who promise to punish me by way of sex all night if I finished all of it. lol One thing I have definitely noticed is that my muscles are staying sore much longer from the weights. My triceps have hurt for two days now. I might lay off of them for a day and see if it clears up. I weighed myself last night. I've lost 14 pounds since I started. You would think that 14 pounds would be pretty noticeable, but honestly I can't tell where it fell off from. The only place I can really see it is in my cheeks and I know 14 pounds didn't come from there. I think tonight, I'm just going to concentrate on cardio and leg weights. OH! One other thing. Not that many people will likely want to know this, but my poop is obviously much smaller and not as frequent. Before this started, I would usually go twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. At the beginning of the experiment, it went down to once a day for the first couple of days. Now it seems to skip a day. That's really interesting to me considering the food I've been eating. I'm sure it's just my body trying to get the most it can out of the little bit of food and not having as much to push through my system, so it doesn't move as fast. Anyways. ONWARD!

Dylside, do you realize that your 'survival simulation diet' is healthier than what 90% of the US is eating? Excepting the meat, you could eat as much as you wanted, until you couldn't eat another bite, and you would lose weight, feel better, and strengthen your immune system.

About the sore muscles, try adding nuts to your diet. Also, soak and cook beans, then eat them cold on your salad. Sunflower seeds and eggs can go on there too. Since you are cooking the meat, I am assuming you are OK w/ cooked foods. Brown rice and red beans are nutritious. You could put meat in them if you wanted. Throw in bell peppers, jalapenos, etc. Bacon works. I realize that isn't a salad, but it is still in line with your diet to an extent, and will give you some variety, which will help you stay with it.

Honestly, taking the multivitamin won't hurt. Unless you're trying to simulate what it's like to not get any vitamins...Which is pointless because you could just google vitamin deficiency symptoms. I assume you're trying to simulate what it's like to live with a calorie deficiency. If you already have your vitamins from the vegetables you're eating, you'll just pee out the rest of the vitamins from the multivitamin - not a big deal.

UPDATE:

Well. Nothing really new to report from this weekend. My muscles have stopped being sore, which is wonderful. I have a checkup tomorrow morning with the doc. One interesting thing, the "movements" have become daily again, but still not back to the frequency they were before. Surprisingly, I haven't really lost anymore weight. I might have dropped a pound or so. It seems that the initial dramatic loss is done. I don't know. That's about it.

One very important thing... This experiment is going to be cut short pretty soon. The wife and I are going to be visiting my parents soon and I'll be damned if I'm going to miss out on not only my mothers cooking, but also my two favorite restaurants. Also, we'll be having dinner with some big time gubment politicians and I don't want to be rude and refuse their chef's dishes. I thought about resuming the diet afterwards, but I might just start my real-life "healthy" diet. This starving has just been a serious PITA. I really miss beer.

This is usual. If you reduce your calorie intake* to a constant level your body learns to exist on that level - weight loss stops - it is called a plateau. When you increase your calorie intake after this period you tend to put on weight because the body has gotten used to the fewer calories.

*This doesn't mean if you go from 2500 to 500 calories/day you will stop losing weight. You will plateau for a shorter period of time and weight loss will happen but at a slower rate.

Read this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnesota_Starvation_Experiment

Increasing weight loss from here - if you want to- isn't all that "hard". strictly balanced nutrition and serious portion control with a diary to keep you from not noticing what's going in. Then all you have to do is double your physical activity! Simple! if you have time, and stuff to do. :D

The Minnesota Starvation Experiment is interesting, but careful reading shows many distinct differences between what you'd expect in a wilderness forage situation and what the experiment provided. In a forage situation, taters and noodles aren't going to be the basis. This can be an important distinction.

Calories are calories regardless if they are from McDonalds or from foraging.

That's debatable on several levels, from the relative glycemic index of the foods to digestibility of the calories. A donkey can digest newspaper and get calories, can you? (Incidentally, fat, fiber, alcohol, proteins, and a few other odds and ends are all sources of energy, as measured in kcal, Cal, or joules. The calorie is just a measurement, not a thing in itself)

Calories are, in the short to middle term, the least important part of this. Allt he comments about multivitamins- who was suggesting Big Macs? No one I saw.

My original comment is very specific in its relation to nutrition as the referenced experiment targets a particular type of 'starvation diet' and then proceeded to note psychological and physiological effects that relate much more to the nutrition values of the diet than to the actual kcal values.
