Survival Skills Course in the midwest??

I want to take a modern survival skills course that goes over fire starting, shelter building, water gathering, etc... I don't want to do one of those 2-week long primative living courses. I just want to do a couple days to get the basics. The problem is, every course recommended on here has been out in the southwest (Arizona mostly), and I'm in Chicago. I wouldn't think I would need to fly to Arizona to learn how to build a shelter.

Does anyone know any good schools in the midwest (preferably near Chicago)?

Thanks

Noshtero, I can't help you on the survival schools that might be near you in Illinois, etc. But....

Here is a good site where you can click on some very interesting and informative survival training videos. These are from Norway, but in forests that would be somewhat like the forests you might "trek" in around your area.

And they are free to watch.

Of course, it is always best to practice to learn, but these videos will definitely give you some useful info and certainly the basics.

Good luck.

Thanks I'll check those out.

My other notion would be to say "It's worth the plane ticket to learn these skills from someone who REALLY knows them, like Cody at ALSS".

I run Briarpatch Outdoors that Brian T mentioned above. I have taught Survival programs for 19 years, all over the country. If my schedule does not work for you, and I will accommodate you if possible, check out Marty Simon at

He is a wonderful teacher! I hope you find a program that works well for you!

I'm off in the morning for a week long Primitive Skills course at Briar Patch. I know it's not what you're looking for but you can expect a full write-up of the school, the instructor, and the course when I get back.

I already know the first two from previous experience and I can assure you the folks at Briar Patch and Wilderness Learning Center know their stuff.

Next time George is running a Basic Survival course we can carpool. :D

Wow! That was a great experience.

The instruction was top-notch. The food was great.

I'll definitely go back again.

George has some fantastic ideas for future classes and I can't wait to see them scheduled.

Ace, I ask only cause I'm in MN and know a couple of things and am often willing to help.

oh I mistook the the abbreviation. No I'm in Iowa and thought it was MN. Do you know the minimal age requirement?

Sorry, I don't, but I'll bet if you email them they'll let you know.

There's no minimum age. George just asks that students are able to sit for an hour of instruction without needing to run off.

I asked about bringing my 6-year-old daughter and he thought she'd be a little young for the instruction but she would've had a great time running around in the woods.

My general rule of thumb is that a student should be old enough to use a pocket knife to get the benefit of my courses. In my opinion, I think a mature 12 year old would be fine.
