survival tests

have them go through a "lost" scenario. Give them some instruction and have them practice what they should do if lost.

A good method of learning is letting them critique each other; make sure you have checklists!
ROCK6

Good point Rock. Just like an AAR. Guided by the dads but the boys will learn more when they recognize what they did wrong and what they did right. It takes the dads out of the classic authority figure and puts then in a mentor/teacher role. Really establishes a positive learning environment for everyone.

The checklists are good for the boys to use and understand what are the right ways to do things and some may surprise others with their ingenuity. Old dogs can still learn.....

My suggestion to you is...

1. A timed race to set up camp.
2. A little camp craft like making a hammock out of an army poncho.
2. A challange to collect and boil water.
3. Teach them to make a loaf of bannock
4. How to properly cook a steak on open coals
5. First aid... how to lift a lazy injured person into a hammock and feed him steak, bannock and coffee.

Seriously though..... don't try to fit too much into the adventure. It is better to learn a few thing well, than to risk cluttering up their minds.

Have fun!
