this vest goes for $69 bux and i figured it could turn it into a bob vest. :p

so... anyone else on the W&S wear survival vests? :o

cheers

My Woolrich travelers vest has lots of pockets, is a lot less tactical looking and still draws stares when I wear it hiking. I don't wear it in warmer months, because of the additional heat factor. But it's great under a coat, for hiking late fall and winter.

I was at Bass Pro the other day, looking at their fishing vests, thinking about how cool it would be to use one on a day hike. Quick access to all your gear, weight kept close to your body, extra layer when its cold, etc. If someone made one with an integrated hydration bladder pouch, I would be all over it.

storl alot of the fishing vests have a large zipper compartment in the back I bet you could probably work in some sort of bladder pouch in there. I fishing vest is very good as a survival/bob vest less threatening to the sheeple.

I use one of those British Surplus DPM vests. In the past, I also used a cutoff surplus BDU jackets for the same purpouse.

I have one of the British DPM vests that I wear on occassion and my main outer layer for day hikes is a German Bundeswehr OD overshirt with sleeves removed.

Short answer is I bought one a year ago. Mine has lots of pockets kind of like a swat vest and an area on back for a water bladder. I haven't actually used it though yet, mine is cutout so it should be cooler. It was cheap at about the same price $69 if I remember correctly. Mine is black to try to avoid that "tactical" look so I don't draw too many stares though I suspect its going to happen anyway. It looks like I should be able to make it work but just not enough time to load it yet.

What is it called and where did you buy it? I want one. :)

I've run around with photo gear in vests for years. My complaint is they are too hot. The fabric is tight across your neck and shoulders and it gets pretty warm. You end up with several layers of fabric too. Depending on your build, you might not like the load coming down on the back of your neck either. The Domke PhoTogs vests have big pockets and all kinds of bells and whistles-- 18 pockets, IIRC. You can easily get more gear in one than you want to haul. The vest itself is not particularly light either. If you don't overload them, they can be handy and lend you a little savoir-faire :)

I bought it at an army navy store in NH. Unfortuently it was the one in the news that had the triple murder so I don't know if they are even going to re-open.

edit to add:
I forgot that they actually have several stores and are on the web.

Molle type vest

The black tactical vest is simular to what I bought but it isn't listed and isn't exactly the same anyway.

So far I haven't been able to find the one I bought.

because of my job I where a tactical vest 8+ hours a day 6 days a week, loaded down with gas masks, ammunition, flash lights, hand cuffs, and all the other stuff I need to keep the world safe from terrorist. My duty vest loaded weights in at 26 lbs.
Now compare that to my mountain rescue rig which is mostly military surplus, H-harness and cartridge belt, Has every thing I need to get my self and some one else out of a bad spot, and weights in at 31 lbs. the H-harness is worlds more comfortable to where for extended hours.
The vest puts more presser on the neck even though I had mine custom made, and heat is an issue.

I made one out of a BDU shirt; cut the sleeves off at the stitching.

Add a "game" pocket or water bottle holder on the back.

I has a fishing pocket but it looked too stupid with all the tiny pockets. I prefer the four large pocket and less-fishy look of the BDU vest.

I used to use a safari type vest for EDC- still have neck trouble, I had about thirty pounds of stuff in the pockets. It wasn't well balanced. A vest like this, becuase you can get laced into it (corsets- not just for ladies any more :) ) will serve you better, but I'd still want something in the back if you are going to be putting a lot of stuff into it.

And I do carry my medium sized kit in a vest. Well, sorta a vest- it is a Tactical Tailor 2 peice MAV, with a pair of magazine pouches (for water bottles, fit perfectly) and a pair of CountyComm EOD pouches.

When I wear it up front, people who've seen it and have commented assume that it is a fishing vest. If I don't have a pack with me, or a very small one that rides high on my back, I can wear this as a lumbar pack.
