Good Day,

I am working on testing some survival/signalling whistles....

I have the following...

Storm
Fox 40
Acme Tornado
Acme 649
SOS Whistle
Penny Whistle

And some others...

Are you folks familiar with any other that I should include?

While I wouldnt call it a survival whistle, I carry a small alluminum whistle from REI... Its fairly loud.

I would be interested in how it compares with some of the more popular survival whistles.

My favorite is an ACME 2000 with sides filed down, others to consider:

Some other pea whistles such as the ACME thunderers in diferent sizes and other referee whistles.

Some two cavity tubulars such as the Metropolitan also in diferent sizes.

Bosun pipe AKA boatswain whistle.

Divers whistles, these are two cavity whistles sometimes shaped like a swimming fin.

others that I haven´t tried but look interesting are the jet-scream and the USCG SOLAS approved whistle, seen on this link:

Don Luis.......I have both the Jet Scream and the USCG-SOLAS, the USCG-SOLAS is made by ACR, they are maker of safety products like strobes, including the Firefly II which is in use the the military.... Do you have links to the others?

Cypher2001......Do you have a link to an image or description of it?

Cypher2001..... Thank you. There is an REI near me, I will stop by and give them an in-store test to see if I want one, when I do, I will try to remember to let you know where they rate....

I have both the fox and jet scream whistle. Both are very loud. The only disadvantage of the jet scream whistle is its color. Black may be a little difficult to find if you drop in the woods. Both are quality products.

Agreed. But the flat profile of the JetScream makes it easier to slip into a pocket than, say, the Mini-Fox 40. I'll buy a JetScream in DayGlo Orange as soon as it is available.

Hey, just for fun, how about adding an improvised whistle to the test?
Like an acorn cap or bullet casing (.22LR casings work great)?

Allen.

My family and I all carry Mini Fox 40's. In regards to the size comparison for carrying, you can make the Mini Fox alot easier to carry by trimming off the excess plastic that makes them rounder. The plastic serves no real purpose other than to make the whistle fatter. The kids really liked the fact that they came in different colors and they could have one that was different from the other.

Just something to consider...

Greg

How about the one in the Swiss Army Knife. I believe it's the Matterhorn model. Folds out like the other tools. Looks cool, would love to hear about it's performance.

John...

Don't know if this could be called a real Survival Whistle or not but ITW Nexus will ship you up to 15 items as samples at no charge. They ship pretty fast, I got some samples from them and it only took a week for them to arrive. You can't beat the price. 15 Whistles for free no shipping and they will be in your hand in a week or so.

The Pocket survival pack designed by Doug Ritter of equipped.org is made by Adventure Medical Kit and contains a:

Fox-40® Rescue Howler Survival Whistle - designed exclusively for this kit, triple frequency, exceeds U.S. Coast Guard and SOLAS specifications, bright yellow with dual mode lanyard hole.

It is designed to be flatter and compact. You can read about it at:

Received some ITW parts today in the mail.

Honestly, I have to say that they are fairly crappy. I can't produce ANY whistle out of most of them. The ones that do only produce a mildly loud and shrill noise.

A great idea... but I guess its more just for show..

I ave a storm wistle from wal-mart ($7.00). it is loud as can be. 96 decibles is what the package says. It even huts my ears when I blow on it. My friends hate it too, so it must work. Maybe I should give it to my kid brother to bug my parents?

Hi All-

Just curious if anyone has learned if the Fox-40 Rescue Howler is available anywhere as a standalone purchase? I can't find a link on the Adventure Medical Kit site suggested by Doug Ritter. Secondly, have there been any product updates to the JetScream to make it available in high-visibility colors yet?

Those two whistles seem to represent the best choices for a flat, loud, durable, and lightweight signal device. Thanks in advance as I would like to make a purchase soon for winter hiking purposes.

Hi All-

Also, does anyone know if the Fox-40 Rescue Howler or JetScream float if they're dropped overboard when used in a marine environment?

If I can find a place that stocks both models, I might be tempted to purchase two and make my decision upon receipt. A friend will just receive a free emergency whistle!

I too m curious as to how DIY examples would work - afterall this is knife-related forum, what better excuse to do some whittling than "emergency survival rescue gear" ?
