Survival Whistles....

Hi Jazzman-

Yours seems like a solid, loud whistle from everything I've read so far...I'm thinking something flatter that could easily hang by a lanyard would be "just the ticket" for what I have in mind. Thanks much.

Hi All-

The other thing I've noticed is that whistles with a "pealess" design should let any water obstructions "blow-free" whenever it is needed. This would also be helpful if you're bicycle-commuting in the rain and wish to have a whistle clenched lightly in your teeth to warn traffic or pedestrians.

Anyone have any ideas on retailers who might stock both whistles mentioned above (Fox-40 Rescue Howler and JetScream) for immediate shipment?

Thanks,

Doug says the Fox-40 Rescue Howler should be available individually after the first of the year from "numerous Adventure Medical Retailers".

I really like this whistle. Very piercing and fits perfectly into kits.

Hi Dizos-

OK, I didn't catch the after the first of the year 2005 part of Doug Ritter's statement with regard to the Fox-40 Rescue Howler availability. Given the flat profile and very bright color, it looks like that will be the superior choice, unless JetScream can respond with a competing model.

That Fox 40 Howler looks pretty nice, I wonder if and when it will get to Mexico.

I´m still partial to ACME, I have had some of them since the 60´s, the plastic thunderer with pea is still one of my favorites, the pea design allows much more variation in tone and volume (some people say the whistle talks), probably not too important for survival but useful for sports and traffic (Fox does make a couple of models with pea, check out their model for the NHL). The Storm (which is also recommended by Ritter) is a very good pea design, it is big though.

For pealess whistles my favorite is still the ACME 2000, with sides filed down it is very thin and carries fine in a neck lanyard under my shirt, I feel it is comparable in volume and pitch to the Fox 40 Classic (haven´t done any testing though).

I¨ve heard comments about high pitched pealess whistles not being too good for kids, the sound is painful to them and they stop blowing them, I don´t know if it is actually true, personally I think that a simple Acme pea design is right for kids and inexpensive, that is what I have given my daughter to take for her camping trips.

Here´s a link to the ACME site:

Whistles are cool! I've been having fun looking at all the links in this thread and picked up the two from REI. I also picked up an English Bobby whistle off of Ebay. I'll be looking for some of the others as well.

I think it is cool that you are not only obsessed with gadgets, but that you make them. I'm not sure what it would take to make a steel (or titanium) tube whistle but I think one would make a great "cheater bar" for one of your Prybaby's if you included an extension (doubles as a flat screwdriver) that can be inserted into the whistle tube. The keychain combination of whistle and Prybaby would be awesome and the additional leverage would help greatly with small prying jobs. Just a thought.

One thing to watch for is whistles that can be "overblown" or blown so hard that they do not make any appreciable noise. In an emergency, you need to be able to simply blow without any worries that you are over or under blowing by a few percentage points and wasting time.

others that I haven´t tried but look interesting are the jet-scream and the USCG SOLAS approved whistle, seen on this link:

Thanks to Luis's link I found and got some ACR WW-3 (USCG/SOLAS spec'd) survival whistles.
(using Froogle.com - I've seen them as low as $1.50 each)

They are pretty loud - but definitely not as loud as my Fox 40 Classic - the effort to blow to get them to be loud is about the same.

Not too bad for a small cheap whistle - I now wear it on its supplied lanyard when cycling.

I just found a wad of the ACME tornado whistles at one local dollar store. These flat orange whistles were also imprinted England, SOLAS approved, printed with ORION. Hard to beat the price. I do wonder why they ended up there. Rather more expensive a wally world for the same thing.

Wish I had the equipment to measure air pressure, volume of wind per time, frequencies and volume produced to rate whistles in a truly repeatable manner.
