Alrighty. I just read a very old thread, and thought I'd change it some to see what you all thought. You are headed out to the wilderness (be it forest, desert, anywhere you might need a blade as a tool) and are ordered to bring with you three types of bladed tools. These can range anywhere from large machettes and axes to multitools and swiss army knives. What do you bring, and what nitch does it fill?

Note: so no one asks, you'll have a rifle suitable for taking large game, and a .22 pistol for taking small game. Also, you will have a sharpener for all 3 of the blades.

I will have to do some thinking on that....I assume these can be custom or production?

Nice to see another WVer here....May I ask what part? I'm from Peterstown...Monroe Co.

Good 15" HI Ang Khola, tweaked by me(replace karda and chkama with ones of my own design, so more useful, chakma from old file, Karda from O1, edge quenched, triple tempered, the works). Between Ak and the Karda, covers anything from skinning, chopping and splitting wood, etc.

surplus trifold from back of truck, one edge sharpened so yet again I have a hatchet type tool, plus shovel for digging, etc.

Good multitool(my tool of choice right now is the Gerbers) to cover anything else.

1) T handled Buck saw with sheath that has both course and fine teeth. It makes short work of sawing up to a 6" diameter.

2) Becker C/U-7 for camp, game and lite chopping duties. Would include the sheaths survival kit.

3) German issue folding utility knife w/saw for lite duty wood and small game chores.

Wolf,

Depends on what time of year it is. I live in Martinsburg, Berkely Co., but go to school in Fairmont, (the county eludes me).

Super Moderator,

Thanks! I didn't realize this place was here! :)

Now where are we going?;)

It's not so easy to answer.
1. You don't have the same needing in desert, wood, jungle,Prairie or mountain.
2. Xtool or SAK can be useful especially if you'll have to open can or cut wire
3. A 4 to 5 " blade will be with me. Maarttini puukko as always
Randall 23 or 25 (if I can dream)
4. For the big one, I have a problem. I don't know anything about desert but if I 'm in the wood I'll opt for a good axe, in the jungle, a good local machete (18" blade max), for the rest a 7 to 8" blade (CS Scout recon that I have, Mad dog ATAC, wild thing, Randall 14 no grip 1 simple guard if dreams are allowed)
5. Now, if I have no info on the environment, A good axe, Randall 25 6"blade/Maarttini puukko and Xtool or SAK

PS Please apology my knowledge but, what mean "nitch". Impossible to find a translation or clarifying. Thank you

'nitch' in this sense means the specific role a particular item is meant to fill.

In answer to the question;

I'd want either a good Gransfors Bruks Axe or a Machete depending on the environment. If I didn't know the environment ahead of time I suppose I'd compromise between the two with a Becker BK9.

I'd want my Gene Ingram #7 Drop Point (Due in March. Can I please be stranded AFTER march?).

And I'd either want a Victorinox Work Champ or a Victorinox SwissTool X (not sure it would matter much which one, I'd probably be happy with either).

BTW, the word is actually spelled 'niche', not 'nitch', that's probably why you couldn't find it.

I've given it some thought..

Big blade would be a Jones knives JK-23 Combat Survival Knife. 7" blade.

My Jones Knives JK-29 neck knife converted to belt carry...

My Victorinox Swisstool.

Ya got your chopper and heavy duty cutter, your fine detail blade, and the multi-tool takes care of everything else.

Home page for the Jones Bros.

Large blade: HI BAS, or maybe an 18" AK
Medium blade: mora or puuko
Small blade: Victorinox Rucksack

Airkat Apache 14
Extrema Ratio T2000M
Benchmade Nimravus

I don't have a whole lot of 'survival' experience, but I figure I could handle most stuff with this trio...

:)

I would concventrate on types, a chopper/shelter builder, a multi tool for building snares, and a good sheath knife for general work.

For around here in the Fir and pine, I'd use a gerber sportaxe, SAK or leatherman, and a Fallkniven or Gryphon.

BK&T Patrol Machete
BK&T BK9 Bowie
PCKS Buck 110 W/BG-42 Blade

They havent let me down yet.

I'd either go for the "typical" axe/medium blade/multitool combo, or I'd do something like:

-Take-down buck saw (I love these things)
-medium-blade knife (119, to be specific)
-medium axe (like GB Scandanavian forest axe)
