As the title suggests. Anyone made or ordered custom scales or sheath systems for your GSO's beyond what the company offers? I have none myself so far but am interested to see if anyone has pimped theirs ☺?

Hmmm....exotac steel, esee arrowhead, GST scout sheath (?) and a Survive! blade. Some nice equipment there Chris.

Far out what a setup! I bet a few more people are going to come out of the woofwork yet ☺. Anyone considered stag scales or nice exotic woods?

I have a skystorm leather bushcraft dangler for my 5.1. Its pretty sweet. I have made my own sheathes for my 3.5 and necker.

If I can remember right in one of the earlier Survive! threads pre-subforum, there was a shot from carzyfingers on here of the Gettysburg "witness tree" oak scales for the 4.1 while on a shop tour, but was a limited run. Seen a handlful of other wood handled scales online too. I've been playing around with a few woods for scales, but will probably wait until they move onto the new torx fasteners before shaping anything out too much. Aside from that just some DIY leather sheath action.

Nice one! Did you line it somehow or use double leather in the seam to avoid the knife cutting through?

I am really enjoying the thread. I hope Crazyfingers and a few others can post handle shots. I have some deer antler and exotic african horn I am considering for a go. The handles from the company are fine of course but I do love to see the creativity of membere when it comes to pimping.

Here you go. Ask and you will receive. I believe there were only 25 or 50 of these made for a local knife shop here in the area. Now if i remember correctly Guy had told me that the name (Gettysburg Witness Tree Oak) was given to it because most of the trees at the Gettysburg Battlefield witness the war given the name (Gettysburg Witness Tree Oak) Also there are still quite few of them still standing there today but not many. The wood that was used came from a fallen tree or one that was hit by lighting. Someone that was helping with the clean up of the fallen tree passed it onto the owner of the knife shop an then Guy was asked to make some scales. This stuff is very rare to come by an is a Federal Offense if you are caught cutting it down or taken fallen pieces. I saw one of these sale a few months ago for 1000.00 on flea haven.

I've thought of making wooden scales, but so far I've only gotten around putting pinstripes under my factory GSO 3.5 scales which improved ergonomics quite a bit for me.

Did you make your own liners? What material?

Awesome story about the witness tree wood. I hadn't heard of that before.

Chris, what brand is your sheath?

Very educational thread!

Yes, it was super easy: I used vulcanized fiber (got it from the an online knife making supply store), outlined the handle and then cut it with a regular scissor. Then assembled the knife again with the liner in places and used an xacto knife to finish the contours.

I've heard people using rubber and G10 as well.

The only issue is that the kydex sheet is a bit too snug, so I'll have to make a leather one.

Here's some work I've done on the Survive!Knives GSO series. Mods and Sheaths. Danglers. IWB's. Custom sales. Survival Rigs.

Halestorm, dang. Those look great. Now I need to take another look at your website. I've always liked the idea of synthetics and those GSO 10 and the orange and green look awesome.

EDIT: You could make just the kydex and nylon attachment for an original GSO sheath, right?

Ok, here is the story with the "Witness Tree" handles. A man I know, who I met through a friend, works with the National Park Service in Gettysburg and is also a great wood worker. He collects wood from the battlefield, as trees are cut down or fall down, in an attempt to save this historically significant wood. He makes all kind of things with this wood and also had a man who was making him "knives" with wooden handles. One day I saw one of these knives and joked that it looked more like a letter opener. Long story short, I ended up making a small batch of these knives for him. I had the wood resin stabilized, to help preserve it and increase the durability. I believe we ended up making him about 22 knives with the wood he supplied and matched them up with Sagewood Leather sheaths.

Here is a story from the Gettysburg paper, that tells a bit more about Bill: http://www.eveningsun.com/local/ci_24538958/adams-county-man-turns-witness-tree-wood-into
