Survive! knives GSO-3.5

Well the blade stock is 1/8 so i am assuming a thinner slicer of a blade but that is just speculation ( i am hoping ESEE 3 in thinnes)

I'm currently curious about the edge geometry on the 3.5.

Will it be on the stout side like the 4.1 or ground a bit thinner like they did with the 5.1?

I'd hope for thinner as a smaller blade would be meant for somewhat lighter tasks like cutting and slicing and not chopping. Will the design be for more extreme survival situations or for more moderate, regular everyday reasonable use knife jobs?

Any thoughts?

I hope it's nice and thin. Take that badboy down to like .015 thousandths behind the edge. No need for obtuse geometry in a smaller blade.

I wish they would offer it in FFG - would make it a nice slicer, I emailed Guy about it, - so far no reply

Hey everyone,

Firstly, the CPM-20CV/tumbled finish online store quantity we set up had just run out. Our online store is just a PITA but we're working on getting a new store implemented. I fixed that, so if anyone wanted one of those you are good to go now. We have plenty of materials on hand to run as many of these as people want. I'm continually doubling down on materials, to expand production as needed. That's the nice thing about doing the preorder before we get deep in to production. The wait is a bit longer but we won't run short. We have already sold all of the numbered slots but we're still extending the preorder discount.

As far as production schedule on these, we are set to have these finished up around the last week of November and then we'll just need a few more weeks for Kiah to get all of the sheaths finished up. These should mail out about 1-2 weeks before Christmas.

On the edge specification, we are bringing the geometry down thinner, to about .015", for better cutting efficiency in this smaller blade. I am making the edges on all of my models a bit thinner moving forward. These steels can take it and they perform even better as a result.

On the FFG(full flat grind, for any forum browsers), I will not be doing any knives, outside of future kitchen offerings, in that grind style. Outside of being easier to produce in a production environment, I don't see any measurable benefit to doing it. The edge-to-spine plunge creates a stress riser, making failure much more likely if someone is tackling a job that requires prying or twisting. Also a FFG makes the blade tip much thinner and prone to breakage. There are tons of other companies out there making FFG grind knives, if that is your flavor. I just personally expect more out of my knives than slicing.

We will be releasing a dedicated bushcraft knife in the spring, in something like a 3/32" thickness, after I teach my crew all about scandi grinds.

CPM-3V vs CPM-20CV for the 3.5
Just curious as to who chose CPM-3V over CPM-20CV and vice versa what was the reason you chose one or the other?

Thanks Guy for the updates and details. Good for you to update your specs as you get more and more feedback.

For chambelona59, I chose 20CV for a couple reasons. I've got a few 3V knives and they are tough as nails. I was looking for something different that had a bit more edge retention, was tough enough for what I plan on using this design for and it's stainless to boot. I've never had trouble keeping my 3V blades rust free, but a little extra insurance isn't a bad thing.

Thanks for letting me know PB Wilson, much appreciated.

Thanks for the heads-up. Just made it with three minutes to go before ordering deadline. Whew!

Thanks Guy for the update.
I don't see jimping on the cgi's on the website. Will there be? Or is there no need to?

Anyone want a GSO 5? I'm trying to trade for a GSO 4. I have a brand new 5, in 3v w/ green micarta w/ bow drill divot an ferro notch. Comes w/ black kydex sheath.

Thanks for the update Guy. You know me, I had to ask about FFG :) I do see your point though. Personally, I do not plan to use 3.5" knife for prying, but I do understand you have to factor that in. Although, grind options such as FFG, Scandi or Saber would be a welcome development.

I went with 20cv because I have 4.1 in 3V and larger models preordered in 3v
for a small knife edge retention and corrosion resistance is more important than toughness, thus 20cv is a better choice IMHO

Thanks Guy for the update.

With a knife as small and thin (.125") as the GSO-3.5, I was a little worried that it might be more aggressive than useful to some people and ultimately decided against the addition of spine jimping on this one.
