Survive! Knives Heads Up

That was you that got it? If it's half way decent that's a good deal.
Yessir. Figured I took several SR101 knives down to 17 degrees and they hold up fine and slice like mad, should see the same in 3V. If it's too thin, well, off to the belt grinder with it.

Just got this A August News Letter in the email. Note that there will be price increases which I though would've had to happen. It was just inevitable and matter of when:

3V will hold up well at 17 dps. If it does not work for your application, just take it to 19 or 20dps and have a double bevel. No need to grind it down and start over. As you sharpen past the original 17 dps bevel, the edge will only get stronger by having more steel behind it.

Since typical fixed blade use is for tough jobs, if you go to 17dps I would put a 20dps micro behind the backbevel which can be maintained easy as use wears it down.

3V handles this well as I had a 7/7 in 3V and it was a workhorse.

Not using a micro will increase your disappointment as that 17dps will breakdown sooner than a micro at a wider angle of course.

Lastly, you could gradually move to 20dps by adding intermittent micros by 1 degree until you get to 20 which will mimic a convex edge.

Definitely! I grabbed it, want to see how that edge holds up at 17 degrees. I'm betting pretty darn well.

That knife was well below 17° if the bevel is any indication...i have taken several gsos to 15-18° per side and I've never had one wth a bevel near as wide as that one...also the slight recurve makes me thing it was belt sharpened.

Mine at 17°.

I'll see how it holds up and just clean up the edge and put a microbevel on if it doesn't work out.

Yea 13° per side is a lil more reasonable for the bevel width.

Honestly it should be fine, aslong as the guy who did it (if done by belt like it seems) didn't burn the edge during the reprofile... micro bevel it at 17° and give it a test run.
