Surviving a week with a Scagel.

Man I am torn between one of these Scagels or one of Bark Rivers Manitou's.

Both are great knives.

The Manitou is the ultimate slicer.

The Scagel Hunter is more robust and a better all arounder.

heh... nice pics of the Bark river Scagel.

Had no idea they were doing a repro. If it was designed by Mike Stewart, what makes it a Scagel? The stamp??

Half thought someone was using a Scagel knife to survive for a week out in the bush or something.

From Post #10 of this thread:

Derrick and Wendy (KnivesShipFree) negotiate a deal with retiring Michigan knifemaker Dave Shirley of Northwoods Knives,

...the owner of the Scagel Brand.

Derrick is now selling the balance of the Northwoods stock,

...and has been working with Mike Stewart to create this new line of classic knives.

In other words, KnivesShipsFree has purchased the rights to the Scagel brand.

The new Scagel line will include folders and fixed blades.

They have contracted Mike Stewart to design and make this first run of 6 models of fixed blades.

As with the BlackJack "Classic Series", Mike Stewart is working hard to capture the feel of the original knives.

I think he has done a good job so far. :D

You know..there hasnt been a Barky that I really wanted in a while..and this one has me jumping...a little throw back.

Big Mike thank's for the pic!!!

I love 52100 so much so that I just had a custom chopper forged for me from it.

However if I pick up one of these two it will probably be the Scagel.

Do you have a measurement between the lines I added to one of your photo's.

Right around four inches.

Very nice review and pics. The knife reminds me of the Marbles Plainsman, designed also by Mike. One of my favorites.

Thanks for doing the review, Mike.

We wanted to shoot for what a Scagel would be today. We wanted to combine Scagel style with modern materials. I am very pleased with the result. :)

wow, that's a really nice knife - BRKT turned out a real classic there

it's nice to see a modern production company producing tried-and-true knives rather than trying to reinvent the wheel

Its a good thing this thread got bumped again. I can't help but come back and stare at that beaut!

Man I'm torn.

Anyone know how this A2 steel compares with 52100 as used by swamprat as far as edge holding and edge quality goes?

I love 52100, but I really like the style of this knife. Torn between it and the RMDx. I lke the design of this one better.
