Recently I was diagnosed as a diabetic, which was a bit of a shock since I was 38. Currently I take drugs twice a day and have greatly modified my diet. I was walking and running 6 days a week but the doc a bike would be easier on my back and joints. So I added this to my plan to control my blood sugar.

Here is a not so flattering picture of me in November of 2009. I weighed 275 lbs. Current net loss is 47 lbs.....

I posted this up here to tell you that if I can lose weight, so can you. I feel better than I did when I was in my 20's. I drew alot of inspiration from Darius on this last season of the Biggest Looser...

Looking great Mark! You definitely look like you have lost weight since last I saw you. Just keep on top of the diabetes! Keep up the healthy living!

right on mark.. looking good man... keep it up...

nice bike too BTW.. i ride an older Cannondale roadbike too...:)

That's awesome what you have lost Mark, way to go !!!

Ps. I never mentioned the shirt eh !:D

Mark, that's quite a transformation. Congrats to you for doing the hard work it takes to change not only your body but your lifestyle!

I too took insiration from the Biggest Loser to get fit. My wife has watched the show from the start. I used to laugh at her and go watch something more "manly" in a diferent room. I decided to watch it one time and have been hooked since. I looked at those contestants and figured if they could get on a treadmill and run at 300-400 lbs., what was stopping me? 65 pounds (and many many miles on our own treadmill) I feel as good as I have in a long time. I still want to lose some more and still struggle from time to time with unhealthy eating but I've kept it off.

BTW, I thought Darius and Michael were unbelieveable this last season.

Darius rocked! and Michael losing over half his body weight was amazing also. I used to get out of breath walking just a few steps. Today before breakfast I went on a little 10.5 mile spin in about 40 minutes. On a bike. At times I was hitting speeds of just over 20mph on the flats. And I had to come to a complete stop 6 times for red stoplights.

One thing that I have learned is if you eat something not quite so healthy, don't let it de-rail your day of eating. Next meal, get back on the bandwagon, and eat right. And have paitence. I think we always want instant results. Give yourself a year of eating healthy and exercise.

Congrats on your transformation !

Current weight is 223, I have lost 52 lbs since Nov 2009! Things are looking better and bikes are addictive. Now my wife and I want mountain bikes to go along with our road bikes!

Great great stuff!! Congrats on the big changes and weight loss, that's no small matter (no pun intended). With exercise/weight loss/diet changes, you can 'all but' rid yourself of T2DM.

i'm 43 and have been type 1 diabetic for 33 years. recently i've had vision problems including a retinal detachment 2x on the right, and now have no lens on the right because the retina was detached when they removed it and they couldn't do the measurements for the replacement lens. it wa s removed because the cataract on that side was soo bad. cataract was from the post-surgery steroid drops and the oil in the eye.

currently recovering from surgery on the left side which changed the focus on that side, can't get glasses until it heals so i've got two magnifiers i use to tweak the focus... which leaves me with one hand to type with.

hopefully things will return close to normal when i get new glasses.

i used to ride single, double and a few triple centuries, mostly on Cannondales and one century on my Cannondale MTB on knobbies. (the early one with the 24" rear wheel)

so take care of yourself. i never expected these problems,

i'm 6'2" and about #185. never been much over that and i was a skinny kid when i got it.

i'll suggest gloves for riding. they can really save your hands from getting chewed up if you go down. you might also consider toeclips and straps with actual cycling shoes or clipless pedals. some of the shoes for them have recessed cleats so you can walk normally.

Awesome Mark......Thats really cool. :thumbup::thumbup:

You know you opened up a really big box when you got into bikes? Its over for you now. Blades and bikes are a evil mistress. Especially mountain bikes. Cali is Mecca for mtn biking. You have no idea. ;)

Happy riding brother. Im always stoked to see someone new to the sport. :)

Whew! so are you saying it's normal for me to be daydreaming about a 29'r single speed... and a Cannondale Bad Boy ??? Cause I was worried...err...my WIFE is worried! :p:D

if you think singlespeeds are bad i've gpt a mid 70s Schwin Paramount track bike in the garage, built with a mid 80ds Suntour Superbe Pro groupu and nice clincher wheels. no room for brakes on the frame, no toeclip clearance while turning, but i used to ride it around town.

i'd love to build up a nice singlespeed, a little high tech a little retro. perhaps a Surly with Paul components and a Brooks leather seat with the bug copper rivets, but the Ti frame and disc brakes.

Fixer, that would be a cool mix of retro and modern design! Have you seen the belt driven single speed by Trek? it's on their webpage....

On my wish list, another insulated water bottle, a pair of real cycling shoes, and pedals and matching clips. And another set of bibs and jersey.... And that's just gear!

nope, haven't seen that yet, but i'll go check it out.

ok, the District and District Carbon look sick! :D would be really nice to see the lighter wheels of the Carbon on a single speed version and possibly with flat bars... sort pf a minimalist version of the Carbon. that's saying a lot because i haven't been a huge fan of some of the Treks over the years.

but i think i want a fat tired single speed.

however i'm not a big fan of proprietary systems. they can be a big pain to get parts for down the road. but if it's some industrial belt and not something you can only get from Trek while they make it it might have potential.

the only "problem" with disk brakes would be that i couldn't make the front wheel radial.. and radial spokes are just sexy. i've also built 1x fronts and rears with a mix of 2x and radial or 2x and 1x spokes.

i left "normal" 3x spoked wheels behind after a bad accident in '82 where the rear that the LBS had rebuilt the week before folded up on me coming down from the reservoirs near home. after that i learned to build my own wheels.

i wanted something that was stiffer laterally.

mt first MTB got custom ordered Phil hubs, custom cut down Mavic 58 rims done by Keith Bontrager in Santa Cruz and built by me. once they had their first tune up i beat the heck out of those wheels, including multiple runs down four flights of stairs at the local JC and never needed to tune them up. that was with a 32 spoke, 24" rear.

Pics! Im a huge vintage bike fan. I have 6 in my garage right now. :o They all need some love, I just keep buying them when I come across a deal. Looks like a bike graveyard in my garage lol....
