Survivor Man's Hat

My first thought when I watched the show is why he picked that heavy leather hat for the desert. Just had to be uncomfortably hot.

I've always got a hat on when outside. I've been wearing a Columbia for the last two years. Light weight and comfortable for all day use. It's gone through the washing machine a dozen times and been hosed off between that. It's held up pretty well but is starting to get fuzzy around the edges. I'll be looking for another one soon but will probably stick to something similar.

Alright, I have a question for Tilley owners. The mesh versions, is the entire crown made of mesh or just a band around it?

Where I live and play the sun will always be a bigger concern than the rain, and when it does rain, it's generally not very hard. What I'm curious about is whether the ventilated Tilleys offer any protection against light to moderate rainfall.

I went with the TH5 in natural hemp for the SOCAL sun. I'm considering getting the LT5 for wetter times.

How would the LT5 work in winter if it was sized to accommodate a wool skull/watch cap?

Not very well. It would be down to your nose. If I'm wearing a knit style cap, I use my parka hood for extra protection and it needs to be pretty stinky for me to use that combo. The Outdoor Research Peruvian Windstopper hat is great for cold weather, even sleeping.

Outdoor Research makes great rain hats, like the Seattle Sombrero. They don't do very well in the wind-- time for a hood there.

Neither of the Tilleys is really waterproof, but will get by for light showers. The nylon LT fabric will dry faster and is lighter.

Just a band is made of mesh. The hat its self is made of a man-made fabric. I bought one to compliment my canvas Tilley for summers here in Tucson but I find that my head gets hotter because the fabric doesn't breathe. The canvas Tilley gets soaked with sweat (or can be dipped in water) and the evaporation helps in the cooling.

Watching the epidsode, I was wondering why a good Canadian boy wouldn't be wearing a Tilley?

I picked up the new Hemp Tilley this year and it seems cooler on the head with less sweat stains showing. I've worn out many of the cotton ones and I am hopeing that the hemp will last longer. One good thing though - they keep replacing the old ones. Just don't tell them it's your 3rd, 4th etc. replacement - they cut the inner tag off and for me would not honour anymore guarantees.
