Les is surviving on the arctic tundra in this episode. He started a fire using some steelwool that he scavenged and a 9V battery. He fished for and caught some huge arctic char mentioning that fishing tackle should be part of any survival kit. Les also batoned some wood for kindling though I'm not sure what knife he used. You can almost sense that he's just about had enough of doing this series anymore. THe harsh weather cut this one short and he had to bail.

All in all not too bad.

When he was pulling in those big Arctic Char I was wishing I was there!

Is this a new episode?

He has done Baffin Island before I think.

My Dad was stationed there in the Air Force in the 50's when they were constructing the Distant Early Warning system.

He took a ton of photos, that I have some of scanned in.

Looks like some harsh terrain!

I watched this episode and the one in the Rockies. Both were good episodes and he actually ate both times! He also batoned!!! If Les Stroud does it, I'm doing it!

Actually, he used a 12V motorcycle/lawn tractor lead-acid wet cell - which he had along with a CB radio - to flame the steel wool. That knife looked like a polished-up $15 PRC-made 'Winchester' knife from Wally World. The fishing tackle was a reasonable thing to have, or so I thought. One, at least, previous northern Canada episode had him with an axe, again, a proper 'survival' tool for the region. I still enjoy the show - that was a good one. He was still there 5-6 days - hard to count with constant daylight. I like my summers warmer.

Stainz

Although we all "oooh and ahhh" over high end knives, it's actually cool that he uses ordinary or even cheap ones at times and makes them work.

Not to distract but what manufacturer is PRC? I'm drawing a blank on that abbreviation.

Cool pics!
I believe i've seen some of your pics before in another thread.
My dad worked with the "Yanks" up on Baffin island back in the 50's.
You never know they might have know each other, lol.
I'll have to show him your pics.
Unfortunately his Alzheimers is getting worse but sometimes he is really lucid with memories of long ago.

This was a new episode and you're right he did do Baffin Isle on a previous show.

No, actually he never has. At least not ever and filmed it. Not in seasons one or two. But never Baffin Isle before. Not sure which of his series you are thinking of, Maybe the Artic from season one, or alaska from season two.

Havent watch this one yet, recorded it last night thou.

Good episode, glad he ate. Kinda thought it foolish to hang up the fish like he did after cleaning them. With how windy it was, thats gotta atract bears. I was just as giddy as les was though when he was reelin in them fish!! Liked seein him baton, and forage too.

My thoughts too! I was expecting him to wake up snuggled up to a polar bear! :D
I kept thinking, come on how can you not catch fish there, then he hit the jackpot!!!!

Just double checked and he was there before

It was the Arctic episode in season 1 episode 5

That was an excellent episode. I think MrCoffee is right - Les has done a couple of far north extreme weather shows, but never one on Baffin Island.

Bear Claw Chris Lappe excellent photos! Thanks.

I was wondering what that knife was. It didn;t look cheap to me, maybe I'm just a sucker! At one point, I was thinking it was convexed and might've been a Barkie or something... that was when he was scraping the lard from the whale blubber to make his sock candle.

He did an episode in Labrador last year, some people might be confusing Labrador with Baffin island.

Edit: i just checked TV.com he actually did already do an episode on Baffin island as KuRUpTD stated above.
