Survivorman-Baffin Island

Season 1, Episode 5 "Arctic" was indeed shot on Baffin Island.

Canadian Arctic

Pond Inlet, on the Northern reaches of Baffin Island, provides one of the most challenging landscapes our planet has to offer. Over 700km north of the Arctic Circle, it sits amidst grinding, ever-shifting flows of sea-ice where polar-bears roam in search of meat. In this severe climate Stroud has been equipped with a bare minimum of raw materials to aid him for the next 7 days - a hunk of uncooked seal-liver, some oil-rich blubber for heat, a seal-hook, three matches, and a knife.

Thanks for all the comments on the pictures guys. I wish I could get them all scanned in, but he took dozens of rolls of film with an old Argus 35mm (I still have the 50+ year old camera), and most of them are on 35mm slides instead of prints.

Just ONCE........

I'd like to see Les do a week in a location that is more probable for most of us (lost in woods during summer or fall) where he uses a well thought out survival kit of a practical size and shows the use(s) of each item during his week.

While I like the "dang, I didn't bring a single item with me" concept, I'd like his last episode to be one where he shows us what difference the "ideal" survival kit can make.

I bet we wouldn't have to call him "Starvation Man" on that show !

:D

Next weeks episode is Les and a "buddy" are out hunting and then have to survive in the woods.

should be interesting ..... fingers crossed.

Hmmmm.... I was wrong. I missed that first Baffin Isle show.

I kinda like these new episodes where he has with him a little more than previous years. Like the pack horses, the rifle and canoe on Baffin Island, and then the upcoming survival during a hunting trip. I sure will miss this show if he really does go off the air.

Good episode. You definitely tell in this episode, as well as the past couple, he was getting tired of doing the show tho. Maybe someone will fill the void with a similar show. The steel wool thing really does work. Even with a 9V if it's fine enough. I used to use it as a kid for a fireworks trigger. Unfortunately it doesn't take long to oxidize/rust so probably not the ideal fire starting method for your PSK :)

I was wondering what that knife was. It didn;t look cheap to me, maybe I'm just a sucker! At one point, I was thinking it was convexed and might've been a Barkie or something... that was when he was scraping the lard from the whale blubber to make his sock candle.

It's true, when he was doing something, I saw the Winchester name on the side of the knife. It did seem to work pretty well, but I think I would rather have one of the other knives he's had with him this season.

He actually brought two knives with him in this episode. He used both knives when fileting the fish. One was actually a filet knife I think. He brought two knives with him, but still no matches. Hmmmm......

It was fun to watch him get giddy when he caught all those fish. It sure would bring my confidence up!

I know Les uses Survival Experts to help him with each show, but does he use the same ones for each location, or does he switch depending on the terrain? I caught the name of a couple in the credits, but couldn't remember if they were the same ones on previous shows.

And who would have guessed that Les uses a "hair" person on the show! Not much work on this show since he had a hat on during the beginning.

Probably a union contractual requirement to have one present. As stated above, I really enjoyed the fishing scene. Got me thinking how nice it would be to have a small cabin with a well stocked larder and a month to spend there.

I noticed the credits for the hair stylist and laughed. They didn't really get their money's worth, given that he wears a hat the whole time!

I lived on Baffin island for 5 years, in the capital of Nunavut, Iqaluit.
It's hard to imagine people lived there with barely even any wood for thousands of years.

Not so bad in the summer though.

Hey Liam,
When I first started scrolling down, all I saw was this:

The knife he used in the show was a Winchester knife from Wally World. I have one that was given to me as a gift last year. They only cost around 10.00 bucks or so. Made in china but pretty good knives. I like mine.

Cheap knives will work they just dont have the edge holding ability of their more expensive brethren naor are they as easy to put a good edge on. They also generaly don't have a s good of design characteristics. They will still cut if the owner does their part.

I think the Winchesters are the Chinese version of 440A ,probably quite similar to what the Byrd knives use although maybe not as good a heat treat. i bought one for a buddy because they are decent for the price and it had a nice full tang and wood handles and even a not bad sheath.

I thought the arctic one was where he had the rifle for bears was not on Baffin because he was able to walk to civilization?
However my northern geography is not what it should be.

Baffin is going to be an important place soon. Global warming has made the northwest passage passable 8 months of the year and much cheaper and faster than the Panama canal.
However it would be a horrible place to have a oil spill with all that untouched nature.
Control of that passage is going to be a big deal.
