Why doesn't the man show how to field dress game? That part of survival training. If anyone's sqeaminsh, the can change the channel.

They change the channel, they don't change back. Simple reality.

Also, you can't learn field dressing by watching television. You really do need to put your hand in something.

It would simply take too long for him to show how to PROPERLY field dress even a small animal. He also probably doesn't want the squeamish people to change the channel :D .
But in the canyonlands episode it did show him slicing open the little (rat?) he had caught.

I'll have to respectfully disagree here. There are a lot of very good videos available on field dressing, but the material is probably to ghastly for broadcast TV.

I am a visual learner and being able to see a technique demonstrated is much more helpful than simply reading about it. Take a look here. Two titles that I learned a lot from are:
  • Quarter And De-Bone Big Game In The Field. This guy is a professional meat cutter and does a ton of elk every year. I completely changed the way I dress big game after watching this one.
  • Deer Processing 101. This one goes from the moment you get the animal on the ground all the way though the whole butchering process.
That being said, reading about it, looking at pictures, or even watching a video will only get you so far. To really make them yours, you'll have to take an animal apart.

I think that if you clean enough of fish and game, they are all very similar. The main thing most people can't get around is the blood and organs on their hands.

Sure fillet a sunfish is different from a salmon is different from a deer and different from a grouse. But for someone who's used to cleaning animals, I think a few quick pointers are good enough to get them going.

He's so busy apologizing for killing something that you'll never see any detailed field dressing of any animals. However, he did show how to skin a rabbit in the Winter plane crash sequence.

They should show it more often .To show how to properly take care of a good meat source .To show the tree hugging wimps that meat is not just something that comes wrapped in plastic at the supermarket.

Hey Guys....

This has been a thorn in my ass for along time...

I've watched hunting shows for years....
One of the problems with hunting shows it that they want to entertain, instead of actually teach.

Out of the countless numbers of hunting/Fishing shows I watched in my lifetime, I can't remember one episode that shows how to properly field dress game or fish, or for that matter how to properly set up a tree stand safely...

One of these days someone will have enough brains to actually put a show together that educates and not just entertains..

If people can't handle watching a deer being gutted, they don't belong in the field hunting and probably should take up pottery and making ceramic christmas trees...

People that don't like hunting, aren't watching hunting shows,, so why don't they teach instead of just showing the kill...

Dressing animals on TV is rare, given that we eat so much
meat. It is a part of life that is kept hidden.

Ted Nugent video on local public TV: he stalked and killed
a feral hog with bow and arrow. Then he field dressed it.
Ted is entertaining and loves wild game (eating).
He has made other hunting videos as well.

On one of his Albums (Into the Wild?), Ted has a tribute
song to bow hunter Fred Bear.

Eric - One problem with showing field dressing game on a show is that it will get really old quick. Most people that watch hunting show probably already hunts and knows how to dress games. For the newbies out there, there are lots of good DVDs and books to be had that illistrate what needs to be done.

I don't know about you, I would be pretty bored if I were to watch someone clean their barrel, and wash their clothes.

Similarly, I would rather see someone catch fish on a show then putting on new line and sharpen hooks.

All those are nessecity for hunting and fishing, but nothing something that I think people would watch regardless of how informative they are.

I really wish people would stop using the term 'tree hugger' in a derogatory fashion, because I am one. Tree huggers are people that would rather see trees than pavement. I was involved in a fight to save 1600 acres of parkland from being made into an expressway. The fight lasted 50 years and then we lost. The fight was fueled by greedy ass developers who, no matter how much money they already have, need more.

I used to spend at least one day every week of the year in the valley, collecting arrow wood, bow staves, cordage materials, wild foods etc. and just woods bumming in general. Now it's gone.

I guess the term originated from people 'hugging trees' to prevent them from being cut down, and if they're weren't as many tree huggers, there would be a hell of a lot less trees, and to me that would be disgrace.

Maybe you people that use the term, don't like trees, but I bet that's not the case. If you want to label people in a negative fashion, call them 'antis', soccer moms or any other term you can think of, but don't slag people who help to protect the very environment you love.

WELL SAID!!!!! Here on Ft Bragg there is a rule that I think is a good one, for every tree you cut down you have to plant 25. Chris

This is the rule in Germany also. People in Germany can only pick wood off of the forest floor for burning. They need a permit to cut a tree and if they cut a tree they must plant a tree in its place. It was amazing using ARMY maps from 1945 in Germany. It was amazing that you could use the treelines for navigation because they hadn't changed since the map was made in '45. Unlike when I was using the maps in the US entire forests had disappeared.

If I had to complain about anything in Stroud's shows, that would be it.... the moaning and apologizing over the game he kills. He keeps it short but I'd much prefer he just shed a few tears and kept words and apologys out of the mix. Then he could get on with the cleaning....
