I saw this show on TV, this guy gets dropped off in the Canadian Rockies with nothing but some video camera stuff. It was pretty interesting but I didn't get the big deal about not having a method for making a fire, when he made it to the treeline he broke up one of his cameras and (supposably) used the lens to make a fire so it's not like he made one "naturally".

Did anyone else see this show?

Survivorman was shown here in the UK tonight (Sunday).
He was in the Arctic Circle in this episode. He broke up a snowmobile
to get bit and pieces to help him survive. Looked like a good show.

I'll be watching it next week.

I've been enjoying this series. Some here have been critical of his methods, but I figure anything TV show that actually gets people thinking is a good thing, especially when the subject matter is of interest to me.

He does use several "artifical" methods to start a fire, including some tools he brings with him like a mag block, or his axe to get sparks. However he also builds fire purely from friction methods on many occasions. He is quite skilled at fire building and shelter making, in particular he improvises shelters out of the surrounding materials quite well taking advantage of existing structure and adapting the construction methods to the material at hand.

In the Arctic episode I watched Sunday he used a rifle he had with him (only for defence from polar bears not hunting) to light a fire by turning a cartridge in to a blank and firing it into tinder. It's really funny, look out for it. :)

I have tried this before, and ended up scattering the tinder all over creation, how did he pull it off?

Remove projectile(s).

Stuff cartridge/shell with cotton cloth.

Fire pretty much straight up.

Retrieve smoldering cloth.

Blow to fan into flame.

He did the same as you :D Took a lot of shots before he pulled it off .

The science channel, if you got the dish network its 193. I enjoy his show. theres alot of stuff he does, the camera lense really does work but did you see the elaped time it was 45 minutes of just standing there. I have it dvr every week. The one thing i think about is the shelter makeing, why spend so much energy makeing a shelter when you could carry a contractors garbage bag. when i camp i carry this stuff on me all the time in my pouch.

A lot of the time he is showing improvising with little to no materials, worse case senario. In various enviroment a large bag or poncho works well to keep out rain and wind but doesn't provide a lot of direct insulation.

This show let me realize that I would prolly be just fine.(as long as I don't have wool char cloth :D ) Doesn't matter how he starts the fire , but that he gets it going to "survive".

Howdy,
I'll tell you one neat trick I saw as a boyscout when it comes to firestarting. On one trip one of the scoutmasters show us how to get fire from water. He took a sandwitch bag filled it with water and used it as a lens to make fire. It took him a while but it worked. So it really doesn't matter the source as long as you can make fire. What works, works.:)

I just saw the costa rica episode, it was pretty cool! He had a multitool this time. He made fire and speared fish. Also cooked and ate a small lizard. I was wondering why he didn't just swallow the thing raw. I kind of like the emphasis on the misery like the biting bugs and stuff, that would be just the kind of thing that would beat a person down it that type of situation.

Why am I just finding out about this series? I must be out of the loop!

Well, when your out in the boones you realy dont want to eat anything raw. Cooking kills parasites. If it were me I would have boiled it.He didn't have a pot but could have used the conk shell he boild his water in. Boiling is best when it comes to grub. Its a pretty good show. I like it. And no your not out of the loop. Its only about three or four episodes in. If you like that, you should check out Hoods Woods.

Hes got a cool DVD series. But check out the introduction DVD, Survival Basics 1 & 2.. Its $15.95, and you get lots of cool tips. On the site the list is 12.95 but that doen't include shipping. I had to send three more dollars when I orderd it. They didn't list shipping on the site. Its worth the money. Check it out.

Howdy.
Just watched this weeks Surivorman. A really good one. Northeastern Canada. Just wondering if anyone else caught it.

I saw most of it. Saw him pretend his arm was broken...of course he chose his non-dominant arm and gave up on that when things became difficult.

I liked the snare thing...though I would like a good book on trap and snare making...all said and done, he made the snaring look pretty easy!

That part kinda offended me...at least it was a GROUND lizard:D

As mentioned elsewhere, parasites can be a problem as well as bacteria. Reptiles and wild animals in general can be a big infectious problem. This is especially more important if you did not grow up exposed to such pathogens. That is why you get sick when visiting other countries and the natives do not.
