In one episode of Survivorman, they dropped him off in the swamp. That swamp is the Altamaha River in south Georgia. I noticed they did it in Winter. Smart move, it can be a pretty miserable place in Summer. Today I jeeped up there to hike one of my favorite "trails", if you can call it that. There is an old cypress logging trail that winds for miles down into some pretty wild areas. I thought I'd go down and get a few mosquito bites and some pics. Both the Jeep and I needed a little off road excercise. When I arrived at my usual jumping off point, I realized that the river is up and the trail is under several feet of fast moving water.

Well, darn.

River everywhere!

I didn't bring a machete today, but I needed to cut a branch out of the way that was hanging down into the trail.

Might as well use my HSK (Hotel Survival Knife).

The mosquitos are swarming, time to climb back into my air-conditioned auto transmission yuppie jeep and head out!

Through the sugar sand, and across Cathead Creek.

Nature is great with air-conditioning.

nice pics, looks like some of the river bottoms around here, seriously snakey in the summer. i spend more time looking down than around.

It looks like a fun place, except the bugs. Man I hate bugs. So how is the Bear knife? It does look like a great design.

Actually, I think it is very similar to the Fallkniven F1, only it is made of RWL 34 steel and cost a lot more.

Ditto that tknife, I don't know how folks can tolerate the bugs in an area like that. I hate little flying, biting buggers!

Looks like a neat place though, glad you're out using that steel!

Awesome pictures! Still laughing over the HSK crack, it does look like a great design though.

I didn't see any snakes or gators in the swamp today, but when I got home there was a large black snake in my driveway. It is 78 degrees today. I was hoping to get some scary wildlife shots, but the river was just too high. Actually, a machete is useful down in the thick places. The HSK is excellent for cutting those annoying paper toilet protectors you find in hotel bathrooms.

Wonderful pics, avoiding mosquitos is one of the cornerstones of survival in Fl., surprised I don'r hear more about that. How well did the Bear grill knife work on them anyway?

Not as well as a hotel room. I bent the little tree down and whacked it just like Bear himself would. Then I rolled up my windows, turned up the ac and drove to the nearest restaurant near a hotel, just like Bear would.... well maybe not. There was a dead crow in the road. I could have eaten it, I guess. Now that I think about it, this is Survivorman's swamp, not Man vs. Wild's swamp. I should have carried the Buck 119 Special instead of the Bayley. Wish I had carried the tramontina!

That's been my experience as well. They say a machete makes a fair bug-swatter,but your arm will get tired before you run out of bugs...:D

New Jeep and knife, nice outdoor gear! My sister just got one of the 4 door Wranglers, took it for a spin and very much enjoyed it.

Thanks for the pictures and sense of humor - I couldn't and wouldn't pay that much for a knife - but it DOES look like a nice little user.

It will be my last $600+ knife! As for the Jeep, I'm retired so it will be my last new jeep, too. It's paid for. Best riding jeep I ever had. It's great to be below the povery level and have such cool stuff. Too bad I'm getting too old to use it as much.

Nice warm pics - envy :(

Here's what the swamps looked today in Ontario - just me, my snowshoes, and the snowmobiles out. According to unofficial walking-stick dunk - still 3 feet of snow. Wish they were nice and warn like yours. 5 months of winter is too much:

Burrrr! I don't know it first hand, but I am told that the mosquitos up there are really bad at times. You'd think all that ice and snow would kill them off.

I prefer my 'Boulevarde Rated' 2WD '05 Jeep Liberty. Lots of room for stuff - and a decent clearance... and stereo... and, it's been paid for since last fall. It really gets into and out of interesting spots... usually in mall parking lots.

Nice knife... but why didn't you parachute in - and copter out, a la Bear? There must be a decent Holiday Inn with a pad - certainly not an 'Express'... he does like room service.

Still, neat pix... did you ever make music videos?

This Wrangler is bigger than my old Liberty 4x4. It holds da yoots and lots of stuff. I am too fat to parachute in. They'd have to use a cargo chute. And a Chinook to haul me out.

Springfield, isn't that up near Savannah? Yeah, there are plenty of swamps there, too.
