Suunto MC-2G and Brunton 8099

Thoughts on my review are appreciated.

Thanks,
B

Brian,

I think it is excellent and I have it bookmarked so I can get the most out of the baseplate compasses I currently own and may puchase in the future.

The one thing that I would point out to you, that I have discovered, is this...

Moving around in low light is indeed hazardous but sometimes necessary. When you want to illuminate a non-tritium (Do they still have any with radium paint on them? ;) ) compass, a small UV LED like my ancient AAA Arc Light is probably the best. It doesn't destroy your night vision which could be effected by bleedover and your natural night vision is critical in moving around safely. The UV LED also has the added benefit that it supercharges better than regular flashlights regardless of power output, LED, etc. It's simply better.

I have not tried the UV LED Photon, but that might be the best one currently available - I can't recommend one unless Arc Light is still in business.

Brian, great article. Thank you for the work and the review. I hope that you continue to share your wisdom with us!

I am really glad you put together the review Brian, thanks for all the work and info you put into it. This is the compass I want to replace. It's pictured with two other of my most faithful tools. When I bought my daughter one of these several years ago I also bought me one so that we would both be using the same compasses when I taught her how to use one. I then decided just to use it all the time and gave my old S&Y away to a friend. Not that this compass has ever failed me but I think I may have down-sized just a bit too far and since it has seen it's better days and the luminous circles no longer illuminate....as you can see... I was looking for a replacement. Now you have just shown me what I intend to replace it with. I'm definitely getting one of those Suuntos
