Svord peasant, K55K, or Opinel #8 carbon?

They are all so inexpensive, why not get all three? Probably under $50 for all of them if you shop around.

The only must have of the bunch is the Opinel. So simple, yet so effective.

Love the idea and look of the wooden handled Svord, but in reality not as much. Still probably worth grabbing at some point, but I was pretty disappointed with mine, edge needed a ton of work, and I would have to completely take it apart and modify the handle to get it to open and close properly. Whereas you can expect an Opinel to not have much of an edge, but it will take two minutes to pit one on....

And even if the edge and handle were perfect... Still a bit of an awkward carry on the svord.

Another vote for the Opinel.
You will find it light, easy to sharpen, takes a very good edge, slices like you can't believe (even after you will find the money for your BM, you will regret the slicing abilities of the Opinel), has a ring that closes it in both open and closed position (the latter is more important for me, but that's just a personal view), and you can actually handle different sizes and choose what fits your hand best.
As for water resistance...there are ways to keep it "waterproof". You will need a little attention when you get it, then it won't give you troubles.

Yep, it's funny I have many knives, some running into hundreds of dollars, yet if you're looking for a knife simply designed to be comfortable and cut things then they can't beat my Opinel!

(Don't tell my wife!)

I don't have experience with the K55, but between the other two, I'd go for the Opinel over the Svord. I've used the #6, #7, & #8, and I like the #7 best. It depends on your hand size and what feels right. I like the Svord Peasant alot, but it is just too bulky to carry. If Svord made a smaller version of the Peasant, I'd probably have a new favorite.

I like the Opinel No.8 and the K55K the best out of the three, but I like them all (and carry them as well!) :p

I have both svord and #8 opinel.
both are the best slicers I have.
Only thing Svord is superior to opinel is using it as blade for batonning.
both are cheap buy both and try them ;-)

Sounds interesting :P Any pictures or links to purchase?

Here's a link to a Google images search of them: https://www.google.com/search?num=1...8.0.127.871.1j7.8.0...0.0...1ac.1.AwxID39kXB0

I purchased one a while back and I would definitely say they are worth the money, but they take a little work. They can only legally be made by one man, who is now over 60 and has no heir, so they tend to have uneven grinds and the handle can be a bit off. It didn't take me much to fix the handle; just a bit of hammering. Mine shaved hair out of the box, and came with a bunch of papers with Japanese writing, another paper saying "God bless you", and an origami hat. I can say they don't hold an edge incredibly well, but they aren't hard to sharpen and are very utilitarian. It can vary, but they go for around $20. Good all around utility knife.

Both the Mercator K55k and the Douk DOuk carry nicely in the pocket because they are so slim.

Nothing at all wrong with Opinel though.. love em .

The new smaller Svord peasant minis may improve pocket carry also.

Cant really go wrong with any of those.

This thread is 10 months old! The OP never told folks what he decided on last February...

I bet the op will miss the cutting performance of any of these choices when he gets that BM. All of them are top performers.

edit: apparently I already replied to thus thread... IN 2012 when it was first created. oi vey

opinel.

svord has arguably better steel, but also a much thicker/more obtuse grind. the wooden handle version I had could not ever be adjust to even be remotely usable. cool knife though.

I don't know about anyone else but i've cut myself badly many times from an opinel closing on my fingers. Personally i would not recommend them.

opinel knives have some of the most reliable locks out there, please explain how this happened...

I have a mini peas and it is the most frighteningly sharp knife I have owned. The edge that thing takes is just spooky. A bit awkward for pocket carry and I did have to put some time in to the edge and handles but what a knife.

Was going to vote for the Opinel, then decided to read the whole thread. Seems kind of redundant now, LOL. Opinels are to folding knives what Moras are to fixed blades - incredibly good tools for very little money.
