I just ordered one from Eric at the Shop online. even though it has been a very mild winter and we have yet to see any ice around here, this is the one SR product that I can afford at the time. So, I went ahead and purchased one today. I am looking forward to getting it in the mail whenever Eric gets around to shipping it. I thought this would be a good way to see for myself how tough and durable the SR101 steel they use is. Does anyone else have one of these?

I bought a few of them this summer. They are really nice, and make awesome gifts.

Especially since I am keeping all of the rat wardens for myself!!!

hadnt thought about them as a gift. good idea~! i am just interested to see how tough this sr101 really is :)

Too small for me. A Warden fits my needs way better. Never know when I might need to cut or pry.

do these icepicks make for a good prying bar? is the sr101 tough enough to withstand heavy prying?

is the sr101 tough enough to withstand heavy prying?

yes.

do these icepicks make for a good prying bar?

No - it's an icepick. Can you pry with it? Sure, but again, we are talking about something the diameter of a pencil.

Yes, you can pry with it. DO NOT expect it to be indestructible due to the geometry/specs of the size of this model.

If you want to pry, you want a Crash Axe.

thanks paddling man. i was just interested in seeing how durable the sr101 was. where can ya buy a crash axe? i dont remember seeing them on the sites store or seeing that they had any in stock. any word on when they are going to be making more of them?

Eric will have to chime in to let us know when more might be available retail.

Otherwise, they appear on the exchange.

If you don't like to buy knives that have at least been handled by another person, than you are going to have a VERY difficult time finding Rats, Busses or Scrap Yards. Release of new models from the shop or the Company Stores only occur a few time per year. The large majority of the available blades from these companies come from folks collections of users and new knives on the exchange. Like I said many of these blades have only been "safe queens" handled very little and never used to cut, slice, chop, hack what have you. I have had incredible success seeking out both users and mint versions of knives I've wanted. Patience is key. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a user or a new knife from a large group of folks on these forums. You'll get to know the guys to deal with over time. And always feel free to PM one of us if you are leary about dealing with someone. The guys and gals here are a great resource.

thanks mike,. well put. wonder why SR doesnt make more knives and sell them on a mass scale like some of the other companies? are they just literally THAT small of a company?

Eric could probably speak to this much better than I, but I'll give my take. Busse, SRKW, and Scrap Yard are small and that probably has some effect on the amount of blades available at any one time. Remember that even the production blades are semi-custom, thus limiting mass production. I believe all the blades are hand ground from cut blanks. I would imagine that other big companies have lots of automation in the shop or factory. You will notice and appreciate that in the fit and finish, even on combat grade knives.

I hope others with more knowledge of the details will weigh in. I would like to know there take on it as well. No matter what I love all of my Rats. I've liquidated most of my Busses at this point, not because they aren't great knives, I just feel that Rats fill a more utilitarian niche and price point that works for me. Good luck in you searches for those cherished rodent blades.

i will be honest, i dont know crap about SR and have never owned one... the icepick will be my first swamp rat... i am excited to get it and see the make of this company. i have heard nothing but great things. and i know they are reknown as being the toughest of the tough, as far as blades and edged weapons/tools go. even though this is just an icepick, i am looking forward to adding it to my collection. i will be buying a Swamp Rat knife in the future for sure though. i just dont want to get the blade and have no means of carrying it. (no sheath) and i am not going to send my knife off once i get it in the mail. that would be too hard for me to do. i wouldnt wanna let her go after getting it in the mail after being so anxious. i wanna buy one of the new rats on the swamp rat store, i like those models they have.. i think they are the chop weiler or something... but i like that style.. just wish some good sheath was available for the model out there to order when i order the knife. i would pay whatever was asked if that option was available. oh yea, and im guessing the icepick isnt carried in a sheath either???? or do some of you guys have a sheath for it? how do you store the pick?

Spec-Ops LONG Combat Master. Less than $40 (including shipping).

The RIP is a pretty cool piece of SR-101, but I don't think it will give you a true sense of the Rats field capability. You can stab with it, but you can't cut, slice, dice, hack, chop, whittle, slash or thrash with it. You'll love it, no doubt, but get yourself a Chopweiler when they become available again. I vote for Muddy by the way. It is one bad-a$$ blade that chops like a champ. This blade will give you a true representation of SRKW's fit, finish, design, handle material and steel properties. It will also cause your bank account to go to $0.00 VERY fast:p.

As for sheaths, Guyon mentioned the Spec-Ops. He really loves those, so they must be good. Can't really beat the price either. If you are more of a leather guy, you can contact Chuddy Bear and he can get you a sweet pair of cowhide pants to you FAST (generally a couple of days). Either way, you don't need to send your knife off for fit as we know the Spec-Ops fits and Chuddy has already done Chopweiler sheaths and has a template.

Don't hesitate when the Choppers show up at the store. They will sell out quick. Do it man, just do it!

i dont like to buy used... never know who or what has been done to the product.

I have bought "used" blades that I couldn't tell if they ever even cut a fart! And I have bought used blades KNOWING they were hammered......with a hammer till the pommel has been deformed. You know, I still use that one most and I have beat the ever loving snot out of it and still it begs for more.

They only "used" knife I wouldn't but is the one Paul used to shave his back...:barf:...ok I lied...I would still buy that one.

I have never heard of a time someone buying a used blade and being unhappy about it.

Try it....save money and time:thumbup::thumbup:

I hear that there will be some Chopwieler sheaths headed for the store in a week or so. :) That is if you like leather, I'm not sure of the plastic situation. Pay whatever is asked?? er, I hear they will be 250.00, yea, dirt cheap for hadiwork like that I hear, yea. ;)

I wonder if a drop leg option would fly at the store? Anyone interested?
