Swamp Rat Folding Knife

I know it is an assisted opener, however, if it has the ball detent hole, couldn't I just take out the torsion bar? Also, if it didn't come with a detent hole, could I send it back to Kershaw and have them add one?

Yes you could. I don't think Kershaw will make that mod for you, but there are several people on the boards here that do that kind of work. STR comes to mind.

Assisted openers are legal in the US and Canada.

The closest knife to the Rat Trap I could find is really really close. It is the Bladetech Rijbak
designed by Greg Lightfoot. Bladetech is the company that made the Rat Trap and it has the same steel(I think the RT was $30V?) and a very similar blade shape. It also has the same G10 handle material. It is not out as of yet but should be any day now.

I would also consider the Spyderco Manix(backlock) or Military(linerlock)

I have an Emerson Commander and I am incredibly impressed but it really is more of a fighter.

Ok, thanks for all of the responses. The main thing I am worried about is if the police think otherwise about the assisted opening knives not being a swtchblade.

Blade Tech knives are super! Nicely made out of top of the line materials if you stick with the domestic models.

The Pro-Hunter, MLEK, and Ganyana are all domestic and are not as bulky as the Rigeback (which is also very nice).

Lots of folks carry assisted openers in WA. The larger issue as far as law enforcement is concerned is what you are doing with the thing. According to the way the RCW is written, an officer can confiscate dang near anything you might carry if you are "being a problem". So, don't "be a problem" and you should be fine.

I'd second what Brian said. I work with Law Enforcement as civilan and have never seen them hassle any of us that carry knives as part of our job. We carry a varity of knives from fixed blades to old school openers with the thumbnail grove in the blade and everything in between. They are more interested in intent than what it is you are carrying.

The ZT series looks really nice, but it is $300. Is there anything about them that makes them better than an Emerson Karambit that I can get on Ebay for around $160 new? I have been researching more, and found out about Emerson just a 2 days ago.

I'm not sure why this knife is so much cheaper than the other ZT knives, but IMO this one should be better. It has a great locking mechanism.
