im in the market to get a new fixed blade... in the 3-4in range and i heard excellent things about swamp rat/scrapyard knives.
what do i need to know about the company before buying one, i know that they don't come with the sheaths and where do y'all normally buy your sheaths
Thanks,
Thomas
(sorry for my clueless)

Personally, i'd buy a 1311 as my first Bussekin knife unless i was looking for something smaller, then the TGLB would be my first.

I have both. I would not enjoy choosing just one of them

Both companies are stellar!

For sheaths. Azwelke, BuyBrown, MashedCat (and others) for kydex.

For leather, Chuddybear, leatherman, Paullong are a few off the top of my head.

Thomas, just know that you have made the right decision bro! Look at the Swamp Rat 411; she's perfect.

Are you sure about that? The 411 is from the scrap yard (sister company). Rodent 4 is from the swamp.

For your first swamp rat I strongly recommend Ratmandu CG for camping or Rodent Solution for every day use. Mashed Cat makes most of my kydex sheaths. Azwelke is good too but I prefer Mashed Cat's drainage holes. If you go with Mashed cat inquire about the stitched belt loop (instead of velcro) and think long and hard about the slots on the kydex sheath.

What you need to know about the Swamp/Scrap Yard ? Life time warranty. SR101 is 1/2 the price of INFI but capable of cutting a car in half without chipping the blade. See Ogers chop shop thread for pics and video.

how is the Rodent 3? and the 311? i like the rodent 4 but $150 is my price point and with everything combined it is a bit over that.

R3 and 311 are fine small knives, but they are small. (you need to think of what you will suse them for)

411 (temporarily out of production) and R4 are well balanced, great feeling in hand small/medium knives.

Another option is Rodent Solution. You can't go wrong with either of them.

i did a bit more hunting and now the Rodent solution comes in my price range
i guess half of the decision is finding the right sheath at the right cost.

Here, this may help you choose:

in yalls opinion do you think it would be better to get a gold membership and go buy used knives with the sheaths or buy them new?

You don't need a gold membership to purchase knives only to sell knives. You can also use the trade forum without a gold membership.

Secondly, I would definitely recommend getting used Bussekin over new. But only new models which are still in production, otherwise you'll likely pay more than retail. Many times you can find good condition knives which are still in production with a sheath in for the same price or less than ordering direct.

I would have to also recommend the Rodent Solutions over the others pictured, even though I don't have one yet. It would be my next choice of all the Swamp Rat and Scrap Yard blades available currently.

does anyone have all the different blade and handle color combos for the rodent solution?
Thanks,
Thomas

Google " rodent solution "... you will be able to see quite a few different blade and handle color combos.

There are quite a few very good kydex sheath makers on the forums if that is what you choose, personally i use Al Welke and have never been disappointed with his work.

what is the difference between the black paper and the black canvas micrata?
does anybody have both or have one of those handle options?
Thanks
Thomas

i have both but not in the solution, the paper is going to be smooth almost like g10. the canvas is more coarse and more grippy imo. i like both but canvas is my favorite. the 2 green handles above are canvas and the black is paper. black canvas will have a sort of grey look to it.
