Swamp Rat vs Esee

So, I have a couple Esee knives, and I like them, and I've never paid attention to Swamp Rat before, didn't even know what they were until this week, and now I'm very intrigued. I really like the looks of the rodent 3 and ratmandu. Looks like the handles are contoured nice, a little something extra in the steel, just wondering, does anyone here also have Esee's to give some comparison details? What does the extra money get you? I have an Esee 3 and 6 now, and was planning on a JG3 soon, but I'm tempted to look at a rodent 3 now...anyone have any commentary? Lol Also is it very much more for customs? I really like some of the g10 scales I saw on the website....

Howdy lumberjack jack. The custom shop isn't taking orders at the moment, they're trying to get caught up on orders. We don't really know how long it will be before they resume. I hope it's not too long as there's one more RMD I want, and I've got a bunch already.

I don't have any Esee knives, so I'll let someone else cover that. I will say that the handle on the RMD is soooo nice and comfortable, and their modified 52100 takes a great edge and holds it.

I bought a Ratmandu as an "upgrade" to my ESEE-4. The handle is in a different class imo. I also appreciate the extra length and stoutness of the blade. Your 3 would have much thinner stock in comparison and would probably be a better slicer for some tasks.

I'm not great at reviews or comparisons, but there are a ton of old threads out there with info. I can take some comparison pics with my 4 if you want, but that and an Izula are the only ESEE's I have.

This thread has a comparison pic with an ESEE 4, 5, and a RMD in it: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...llkniven-S1-or-Esee-5?p=10396683#post10396683

Thanks, I've been researching a bit. I think I'll like the size of the rodent 3 being smaller than the esee 3 for a lot of things like skinning or opening up animals, and I prefer it's design over the izula, but think I wouldn't prefer the rodent 4 over the esee 3 which i already have. The ratmandu - well its just cool looking even tho I can't logically justify needing one lol. But the rodent 3, think I might seriously consider one.

Justify? What is this justify, of which you speak. I think I'm up to 13 now (including 4 in INFI), and I feel no need to justify that to anybody. Heck, I'd buy another one if I could get it in (nevermind - that's between me and Trissy)

There will be no orange/black G10 for a while; unless you can snag it on the Exchange, or it shows up in a Ganzaaa

Ya you're right. Justifying is kind of dumb to try and do when it comes to aquiring knives. Just get it, no need to ask why.

When you say that, is it an indefinite while? Or I just can't get one in the next couple or 3 months while? I'd be good if I could have one this summer or even later...

Indefinite, unfortunately...I don't hold much hope that the Custom Shop will be open to orders before the end of the year. (If I'm wrong, I've got my own R3 desires)
Until the CS starts taking new orders, we're all stuck with the options available for direct order from the website.

Ok thanks for the info. In all honestly I'd be totally happy with the regular model, I just really like the orange/black scales

I've got one of these Paw Paw kydex sheaths. Super fast deployment from the pocket as the sheath gets hooked and stays in the pocket. Great design.

Jared's pic not mine.

Think I might have a leather sheath solution after a bit of research. Patriot leather makes custom fit sheaths for a whole list of knives they have on file. Seems like they're highly rated, maybe a little pricey but seems like you can tell where that money went from the reviews. For my Esee 3 I bought a medium sharpshooter sheath for under 25 dollars that fit it decently but seems for this rodent my surest bet for a decent fit is a custom fit one...I thought about kydex but in the end I know I really want a nice plain bushcraft type leather.
