SwampRat/Busse, Strider, Emerson or Extreme Ratio

Have you considered Fehrman Knives? Personally, I try to stay clear of "proprietary" when I'm buying things. Fehrman uses CPM 3V (impact toughness approaching the levels of S7) in his blades. From what I've seen with my Final Judgement, it is the king of tough in steels that will hold an edge. Fehrman owners think the world of his knives.

I'll second ras, look at the Fehrman blades, there strong has all heck, they come very sharp for large baldes, can take anything you can dish out on them, plus there damn good lookin blades to boot ;)

I own some of all the brands you've mentioned except emerson...
they are all great knives, I don't think you'd go wrong if you picked from those brands, I'd suggest focusing on fixed or folder, what size, what applications...etc.

Strider AR folder.

Strider MT-L fixed blade if you go for 1 of each. Read the stories about what Strider knives do day in and day out. They are built for the real world. Mick Striders' warranty is simply awesome. unconditional LIFETIME warrenty. Yes even on their folders... even if you( yes you) abuse the living crap out of it. And like the other gentleman said... Mick takes care of his own. If your son needs a blade... he will do everything needed to get him a blade. Once you own a Strider, everything else you have owned feels like tin foil. And thats all I need to say about that. ;)

I think what you plan is very admirable and While if I could have one knife I'd want either a Strider GS (my pick) or a Chris Reeve Project I. I think the Busse are more of a camp/field knife while the GS and Project are definately more of a soldiering/combat type knives. Busse fans don't flame too hard :D

However here are some options to possibly better manage your money:) I'd get him a Camillus C/U 7 (it's technically a BK&T product) for about 50USD it is a 7in carbon steel knife that will cut like a laser beam and is about as tough as they come. Has a great Sheath that can hold a leatherman or a stone. I'd also get him a Spyderco Medium stone or some other alumina-ceramic (hope I got that right) stone to keep his knives sharp. I've a C/U 7 and while its NO Busse (ok guys I admitted it :) ) it is a great knife, arguably much better than the great Ka-Bar that saw service in WWII. Then I'd get him a new Leatherman Charge for about $90 dollars, it would be very useful to him. Also I'd throw in a Ka-Bar Operation Iraqi Freedom commerative knife for around $60. Finally as a true collector knife and a reminder of why we are at war I'd get him a Spyderco World Trade Center Rescue Knife which is around $225 I think. So for about the cost of one Busse we've got two nice collectibles that are directly related to his military service, a Great multi-tool, and an excellent combat-field fixed blade. Also, don't forget prehaps the most important gift of all your prayers and love. God bless :)

My Extrema Ratio M.P.C. folder is the strongest folder I own. You can see that it is designed for almost anything a fixed blade can handle. It is a monster. I wouldn't write Extrema Ratio off.

Take it from a maker. You will NOT be able to beat a Strider. Unlike what other companies "claim", with Strider the Guys and the gear have been there and done that many times over. There stuff is tuff and they stand behind it. Period!

That said, my first choice would be a Randall. If you want one and are having a hard time getting one, e-mail me and I can set you up with a good friend who is a respected dealer.

Nothing to say about the other companies mentioned. Like Momma said. Dozier is good stuff though.

If you find nothing else (no personal plug just a last resort option) I have a Model 12 that was heading to Vegas next week. It is the first availible in a year. They have been a favorate of UH60 crews, so have been moving quick and military always gets first dibs. if you want a look, I will shoot you a photo.

But go with Randall or Strider first picks, you will not be disappionted. And neither will your son. And let him know we are all proud of him!

Both strider and Busse are good choices. And for a mid-sized fixed blade, the prices will be simular.

I like fixed blades in the 4" blade range, and have a Strider EBS, and am going to get a Busse Mean Street, which just came in at the Busse Company Store.

These are both great knives, they just have different feels to them.

STRIDER!!!!!!!

anything less than that would be silly.

A little information backing up this opinion would sure be nice.

I've never found any testing data that clearly supports your optimism.

If you have some I'd love to see it.
