Excuse my ignorance, but what is the distinction between a friction folder and "slip-joint".

A slip joint folder has a back spring, that the blade pivots against.
Kinda of a locking mechanism for the blade.
See photo below, how the blade would pivot. They have like a snap to them, opening and closing.
Getting all this just right, makes them a hard knife to make and to make well.

Friction folders do not have a back spring, that the blade would pivot against. They just pivot freely, you could say.
